Not as annoying as the "convenient switching of languages". When two people who speak the same tongue and are shown to speak it with each other or their countrymen switch to English just because.

Are you talking about Translation Convention? Where they book-end the English dialogue with the language the characters are "actually" speaking and then switch to English for the audience's benefit?

And sorry I don't understand what "book-end the English dialogue" means.

By "book-ending" I mean having the characters speak their native language before and after the English portion, like [greeting in Arabic] English dialogue for the audience's benefit [goodbye in Arabic]. To establish that while the actors may be speaking English for the audience, the characters have been speaking Arabic the whole time.

I was asking if you were talking about that, or if you meant like with O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill where even though she's fluent in Japanese, speaking to a Japanese group, and that portion of the film has been subtitled for a long enough time that the audience is okay with it, she switches to English "Just so you know how serious I am about what I'm saying."

One is a reasonable filming tactic, the other is just silly.

I find it curious that people apparently cannot read subtitles for the two goddamn minutes it takes for the two foreign people to discuss their business. It's not that hard.
