It mostly ruins it for me, because I'm incredibly anal about my fic and can't stand it when it doesn't mesh with canon, unless it's a blatant AU. Implausibility is one thing - I'll let myself get away with a lot if I can explain the workings behind it enough. Outright contradiction is another.

Although sometimes even canon contradicts itself, and in those cases, I'm just like "Eh, I'll go with my preference/first instinct".

Edit: And when I say "ruins it for me" I mean more in the sense that I feel ashamed of having written something contradictory, rather than "THIS DIDN'T GO LIKE I WANTED IT TO, SCREW THIS SHOW/GAME" or something. It ruins my pride in my fanstuff; my love for the canon remains intact. ;)
