Jossing

How do you feel about it? Does it change (or ruin) your ships/fics, or do you view your shipping preference and fanfic ideas as separate from canon?

.....what is jossing

It's when fanon is wrong.

More precisely, when fanon for an incomplete canon is suddenly contradicted by new canon. Like when fans build up a theory about future plot or character developments or unanswered questions over the course of a season, only for information revealed in a newly-aired episode to render the theory nonsensical.

Unless it's a blatantly terrible development, I just roll with it? I mean, canon is canon, I'm not gonna start fuming because it didn't go my way. Honestly I ship keeping in mind that things may change, and try to adapt my headcanons to it.

It mostly ruins it for me, because I'm incredibly anal about my fic and can't stand it when it doesn't mesh with canon, unless it's a blatant AU. Implausibility is one thing - I'll let myself get away with a lot if I can explain the workings behind it enough. Outright contradiction is another.

Although sometimes even canon contradicts itself, and in those cases, I'm just like "Eh, I'll go with my preference/first instinct".

Edit: And when I say "ruins it for me" I mean more in the sense that I feel ashamed of having written something contradictory, rather than "THIS DIDN'T GO LIKE I WANTED IT TO, SCREW THIS SHOW/GAME" or something. It ruins my pride in my fanstuff; my love for the canon remains intact. ;)

Eh, I'm more than happy to charge blithely into the wilderness of canon-divergent AU. As long as my story was canon-up-to-point-X, and develops plausibly from that point forward, I'm happy.

If I have a ship that starts out as canon and that I'm invested in, I'll probably get pissed if it gets canonically broken up. But I don't tend to worry too much about my non-canon ships becoming canon, typically.
