Don't mean to hijack the thread, but...

I'm really curious to hear peoples' opinions. Do you think this ship/fandom is disgusting because of the age gap? Does it make a difference if (nearly all) the fanfic about this pairing involves an adult Sarah and usually tries to rectify the power imbalance in the movie?

Or is it just gross no matter what?

It's not the age gap, it's the fact she was like 16 or something when it was filmed.

da

I think she was 15 actually, even though her character was 16

It's absolutely okay because

all of Jareth's romantic options are short and immature

"At least they're all at convenient blowjob height," sang Jareth.

He's already had to resort to babysnatching as a means of reproduction. Let him have this.

I usually feel drawn to ships with fucked up power dynamics, tbh.

The thing is, it's a strange movie and open to many different interpretations. It's not even entirely certain what's real and what isn't. I mean, it's obvious that Sarah's subconscious plays a part in the construction of the labyrinth, so how much power does Jareth actually have? Is he a real person, or at least partly a construction of her own fantasies? As for the age gap, what IS his age? For all we know, it could be a fortnight.

There are countless ways to portray their dynamic in fic, some more likely to attract outrage than others.

I'm 30 and I still ship it. *shrug*

My favorite theory is that Sarah has to go back to the Labyrinth as an adult, sure*. Most fic takes that stance - that they don't get involved until Sarah's mentally his equal. It's hardly the squickiest ship out there. At least Sarah had hit puberty and there was a significant subplot about how the Labyrinth (and Jareth's own actions) were being driven by Sarah's expectations.

* This is technically my second favorite theory. My first favorite is that when Sarah said the words "for my power is as strong as yours and my kingdom as great" in the finale, she made it truth and thus accidentally gave herself magic skills and a faerie kingdom and that is what she has to go deal with as an adult. Also, Jareth.

Your first favorite theory is my new favorite thing. That would be excellent.

I shipped it when I first saw it, still ship it, never had any 'issues' with it. Jareth is pretty obviously at least half under her control and responding *to* her wishes/fantasies/expectations, and if she really wanted, I think he could be a teenage boy instead of a grown up (she was just having so many issues with the grown ups in her life, he was just another old person messing up her life).....

Anyway, the *very* first time i saw it, i was like 'damn, she should have stayed with him'....

I ship it, and the age gap doesn't bother me for the reasons you mentioned. Fandom's pretty strict about Sarah being above the age of consent, and the reason why most of the romance-related fics exist is to level the playing field. I think that's neat, actually.
