I can't help but think "the french translator" who assisted her/him is Google Translate. Very bad move there.

OP, don't be afraid to ask for help. Where? Wherever you go for fandom. Most of the time people who speak the target language will be happy to help.

That said, it is annoying when you give a writer some corrections on their foreign language parts and they argue for what they wrote - usually because they saw the same mistakes in other fics (fandom-invented French pet names, anyone?).

Sometimes even canon gets it wrong. There's an episode of Dexter's Lab in which he studies for his French test by listening to a tape in his sleep but it gets stuck on one sentence which ends up being the only thing he can say - omelette du fromage. But the correct phrase is omelette au fromage.

Oh well. I still loved the episode, nitpicking aside!

SA: Ah yes, and when you try to tell people canon got it wrong (which happens all the time in comics), it doesn't always go well.

Marvel Comics is infamous for mangling foreign languages, too. And it's stupid of me but I hate Gambit and Northstar just because of that.
