In my personal experience, I have read a few SuperWhoLock fics and was not totally fond of the idea. I've read SPN/DW crosses and I do agree with those who say the two fandoms don't quite gel. I've read at least on SPN/Merlin cross which I thought worked well. Sherlock I think would go well with a lot of things because part of the fun is how both John and Sherlock react to the out-of-the-ordinary details of the other canon. Despite a few opinions, I have severe doubts about quite a few of the other fandoms, but I have a strong fondness for Hobbit/Sherlock reincarnation AUs.
The other big problem that this apparently presents is one I don't personally face: the ubiquitousness on Tumblr. I'm not on Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)Same here. Tumblr is too spazzy and time-consuming for my taste, and I don't really know how to manipulate images. Don't those people realize they have the power to leave Tumblr and come back here or to LJ?
That said, I once tried to read a fic that involved a ton of fandoms, including Torchwood and House, and after a while, it just stopped working and got ridiculous, so I can see why people are annoyed with it. On the other hand, I wrote a five-chapter fic two years ago where each chapter was a oneshot of a character from a different fandom meeting/interacting with Thor. I'd gotten the idea from a DW fic I read some three years before that where the Doctor picked up people from completely different fandoms, and that fic was very compelling. So fics with multiple crossovers can work, but authors have to understand that they don't have to contain massive, overarching shared universes.
Also, as someone already pointed out, these massive SuperWho[inserttenfandomshere]AvengeLock AUs may be more suited to gifsets than fics---Tumblr is more suited to hosting gifsets than fics in its format.
