Don't feel bad OP! JRPGs are games in my eyes. I tell everyone I love the Tales of series and TWENY. I also love Hakukoi: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom and Corpse Party. Those are very Japanese by default as they're visual novels.

I don't think Mass Effect is "normal." It's just a Western game (I'm guessing you live in the West) and as we live in the West, that is what people gravitate towards.

Love what you wanna love!

I'm the same - most of the things I play nowadays are Japanese handheld games. I don't go around proclaiming that I play them but I don't deliberately hide it either unless it's some guilty pleasure otome game and my friends rarely comment on them... but then again most of them also watch some anime/play some J-games so that might have something to do with it *shrug*. At any rate, rock on with your gaming choices, OP.

Pretty much this is me, too. The games I tend to prefer are usually Japanese in origin (the characters, goofy stories, and bright colors just appeal to me more), and I love my handhelds. I don't talk about it unless someone wants to know, but I don't hide it either.

Most gamers who prefer "normal" games, well, they've never personally insulted me about my preferences if it's come up, but we usually can't hold a long conversation about games, either, heh. A lot of gamers also enjoy playing a mix of games, though, so...I don't understand the "I can never tell *anyone*" mentality. Obviously lots of gamers also enjoy Japanese games, otherwise they would never localize them outside of Japan.

Unless you're specifically meaning IRL people, which I could understand. Lots of places online though, that you could go. Try http://www.siliconera.com/ , it's a game news site, but most people there are people who like jrpgs and stuff.

Trust me, nobody who matters gives a damn what you play.

Anyone who hates a game just because of where it was made or the art style it's in is damn stupid. Also I'm pretty sure that cat is playing FE11.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can has FE11?

So do I, mostly. And it doesn't really...matter. If anyone's going to look down on you for what types of games you play, you don't want to deal with them anyway.

I'm not sure what makes Western-made games more 'real' than Eastern-made games, though. Is it the FPS vs RPG dichotomy? (Probably not, since you included Mass Effect, which is in itself largely an RPG from what I understand.) Is it the art style? Anime styling is a perfect valid art style. Not sure what qualifies something as a 'real' game here...

Oh, wait, I've got it! A 'real' game is actually -any video game ever that exists-. There you go.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Anime styling is a perfect valid art style.

But that's the thing. You and I may think so, but a lot of other people don't.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, a lot of people might disagree with me but I'm pretty sure it's plain and simple racism.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
theres nothing wrong with jrpgs

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-05-11 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me, the fact that you play video games from Japan doesn't make you any less of a gamer. Anyone who tries to put you down for your gaming choices can fuck right off.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF? Seriously? I know I've been out of gaming fandom a long while now due to lack of money for the next-gen consoles/updated computer, but jrpgs were the thing while western rpgs weren't (although they were starting to make inroads and become better). Also, just cause it's a Western (i.e. European/American) game rather than an Eastern (Asian, Japanese) game does not make it better than the Eastern game. Due to different countries and playing and story styles in each country you may find you prefer games that originate in on country over the other. Nothing wrong w/that. At all. I don't know of anyone who'd mock you for liking the Tales games; I've heard nothing but good of them from people who've played them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this just means that the OP is hanging out in some fairly shitty fandom circles. Only the worst kind of nerds care so much about JRPG vs WRPG vs whatever that they would put down fans for liking them. (Honest critiques and comparisons are another thing entirely; and I am, of course, giving the OP the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they're carrying themselves as a person who knows social context and isn't yelling up and down "OMG JAPAN IS AWESOME AND YOU'RE ALL TROGOLODYTES FOR NOT LIKING THIS CLEARLY SUPERIOR GAME etc." all obnoxiously-like.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
sa

Wow I need to proofread my comments. "Obnxiously". Just "obnoxiously". Welp, that was embarrassing. Huh, my spellchecker isn't working.

jrpgs were the thing while western rpgs weren't

Shiiiit son, you've been out of the game a while. You're right, I remember those days too (back when FF was in its heyday) but they are long over. Fallout outsells FF now.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this. Any JRPG that isn't Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts is basically niche in the Western world, and even FF isn't selling like it used to.

[personal profile] gobbledigook 2013-05-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it seems people in "general" gaming communities tend to view Western RPGs as better than Japanese ones. Reminds me of that 3 part video series in Penny Arcade where they did a completely biased comparison between many WRPGs and, well, Final Fantasy, as a proof that WRPGs were better.

RPGs have always been my main reason to game but nowadays I kinda wonder if I can even say I prefer japanese RPGs at all. The Tales series is my favorite ever and I really don't have any shame of it because they really are awesome games, but there aren't many more are there? There were so many good RPGs in the PS2 era, too. :(

[personal profile] ex_valour601 2013-05-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
There's actually one coming out this... August? It's smushed somewhere between SMT IV and the other JRPGs releases/re-releases coming out. I think Graces f also came out sometime last year.

I find the WRPG v. JRPG thing exhausting, and I do play both now. Yeah, the market's stagnant, but there's still some good stuff. All the sites I check that aren't heavily biased bring up Xenoblade now, which tickles me pink. Heck yes, former Squaresoft employees.

EDIT: I totally misread your comment, and I agree. There aren't a lot of new series coming out lately. I think the only one people cite outside of FF or Tales is Persona and SMT. Aside from those, the best we can expect come from lone games. At least Nintendo's getting some stuff going.

You're talking to the wrong people, then. Everyone I know that plays games will play MMOs and JPRGS and FPS equally, as long as they're "good". In fact, I know quite a few who prefer Japanese games.

(And not just Hatoful Boyfriend. *shot*)

I almost hate to say it, because it's so cliche, but haters gonna hate. You never know when you might find someone who likes the same genres or titles as you.

[personal profile] ex_valour601 2013-05-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's tough if you don't have friends into gaming, but you really don't have to feel bad, OP. I have a few friends that play Japanese and Western games, same as I do, and it's never a big deal (even when some of the Western-only gamers we do know tease us). Just like whatever makes you happy.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, JRPGs aren't 'unacceptable' to like, but they sure have.... declined overall. There's still some series that keep my interest in JRPGs, namely MegaTen and all its spinoffs, and Fire Emblem. Besides, who cares what other people think?

(....and you still have Mass Effect! Play the third one!)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, where do YOU live/who do you hang out with where JRPGs are not acceptable? ... like aside from 12 year olds who only think fps is the only acceptable genre.
