Back when I was 14 my bff and I used to watch porn together. And when we had computer class, the guys would get together and watch porn. Of course, we'd giggle like idiots because "lolpenis" and stuff. So I'd say it's like a weird bonding experience? Nowdays we just make fun of it because some stuff is so damn raunchy, but it's also a sign that we are pretty comfortable with each other to talk about those kind of things.

Depends on the motivation, I guess? My friends and I have watched porn together for the lolz, but if you're watching it to actively get off on it, that might be a little awkward unless you and your friends are exceptionally chill about that sort of thing.

Regardless, I'm not sure this would help the OP, anyway - their problem has to do with seeing their porn characters in a non-porn context. Even if their friends knew about it and watched with them, there's still a good chance that they'll still try to get OP to watch the canon.

with online friends it's been no big deal just because i met so many of them through sex-oriented fandoms in the first place

...unless you're watching the porn to laugh at it, it's...really really awkward to watch it together - particularly if you're watching it because you want to fap to it [either then or later]. I mean...at least for me that would be a complete turn off.

Well yeah... Wait, shit. Maybe I should have explained myself and added that we did watch the porn for lulz. God, it's like I'm burying myself into a hole the more I talk.

I'm not really one to fap to porn, but I watch it with friends because it's ridiculously cheesy. Also there are some honest to God humorous porn out there which are pretty funny. Like that Family Guy porn parody.

Aha I don't find porn that great. I only like it if the two characters going at it are into each other. Otherwise it's a no go for me.

I do like dramatic readings of 50 shades bad porn in general, though.
