I agree. There are a lot of shows I like, but when it's week after week, I find it tiring... I actually kind of like shows with shorter runs, like only 10 or 13 episodes like some of the shows I watch on cable are.

Streaming TV's not an option for me for a number of reasons so I feel your pain. I'm so glad our cable box doubles as a DVR, because I've had to miss Top Gear a couple of times because people have this thing about having fucking emergencies at 9pm on a Monday night.

Hm. It's 7pm on a Monday night. Time to shut off my phones and pretend I'm not home for the next few hours.

Missing Top Gear is not acceptable!

also I did not know you watched Top Gear!

I fucking love Top Gear.

Top Gear is awesome! Which reminds me, I should just watch the newest seasons episodes again...

Oddly enough I don't have a drivers licence, or a need to ever get one.

I get that some people really can't bear the thought of not being caught up on their favourite shows and all that, but I usually just watch the show at my own leisure and then catch up on the stuff I didn't get between season breaks. Of course, I'm not very serious about my TV fandoms, so I don't mind missing discussion and things.

I hear you. I've been watching Once Upon a Time since the beginning, and while I love the show dearly I got behind because of school. Getting back in track can be kind of annoying, and it's why I only have a few shows I HAVE to watch every week, whereas others I binge-watch seasons.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
This - particularly along with OP's point about spoilers. I was actually kind of relieved when the OUaT finale came because now I can go back and read all the fic and meta I missed whilst hiding from being spoiled.

Even keeping up with like 7-8 shows at once I've never had a problem remembering the storylines (possibly slightly worried about the number of shows you're following that that's a problem). But recently, I've definitely become less interested in a few shows I've watched for years, partly because they've declined in quality, and partly because I've got other stuff going on in my life. So I think I'm going to stop watching them once the current seasons end.

(I don't have your problem about needing to watch them when they air though - living outside of the US helps this. I'm pretty happy with downloading the shows when they become available, settling down with dinner or a cup of tea and watching whatever I want, in whatever order I want, at my leisure. Some people have long relaxing baths; I watch my 'stories'.)

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-05-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
watching them at your leisure might be why you find it easier to keep up with the storylines-- it's generally easier to figure out what's going on if you watch a bunch at a time. Also it depends on what shows you're watching. TBH once I started watching GoT on a weekly basis I began to find it really difficult to keep up with all the damn lookalike characters.

I mainly watch all my shows as they air though - which, this season, was 9 shows. Not all of them aired every week because of breaks and different season lengths, and some of them are procedurals, but most have some overarching plot points that you have to remember to understand what was going on. Idk. I think I have a good memory for both plots and faces - I'm the person in my family who tells everyone else who the characters are in GOT when they all get confused, lol.

I barely ever follow currently-airing shows (basically all my fandoms are stuff that's already cancelled or consumed via marathons during hiatuses), so I LOVE May sweeps, because I can follow how everyone is gasping with anticipation or exploding over shows that I'm not in the fandom for but might be kind of familiar with. It is so much fun. I don't know what it would be like to be simultaneously following several current shows at once. I always thought it would be exciting but...yeah, come to think of it, it sounds like sweeps could be rather exhausting.

So with you on this OP. I watch too much television and there are times when I want a break from it (or I have something else I'd rather be doing) but I feel compelled to keep up. If I let myself fall too far behind with a show I have a hard time catching up. Most of the shows I watch are on 'off season' right now and ngl, it's kinda lovely.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no trouble keeping up, butI like the off-season better too.

The fanworks which get produced then are much better, because people aren't rushing to get them out in the one week before they might stop being canon-compliant, so there's actually long, plotty, well thought out, beta'd stuff. Plus, most of it actually stays canon when it's not written in the middle of an arc. And there's more room for in depth discussion, rather than everyone just talking about the same things from the most recent episodes.

agreed on off-season fanworks. The fics I started writing before Vikings ended for the season are so OOC now that it kind of pains me to write them :\ But I can't change my characterization without them becoming OOC within my fics.

I'm the opposite as I love marathoning a show after completion. Waiting for a new episode after a cliffhanger is what drives me nuts. Somtimes it is hard to stay away from spoilers, but I've learned to be pretty good at scanning and closing/scrolling past them.

However, I do like watching shows when they're on as well so I can discuss them with fandom. But I hate how TV has so many seasonal breaks now. If I didn't have a PVR I'd forget about when they came back on and their time slot.

add in all these liveblogging/livetweeting things and the apps you're supposed to use and "checking in" and all that and yeah. I totally agree. It's too much work for something that should be fun :\ And I'm not even in that many TV fandoms!

I hear you...

At least living outside of the US, I download all my stuff so I don't have to think about scheduling.

Though my folder with shows I haven't had the time (or energy) to watch this season currently holds 138 episodes...

I need help, or possibly for some of my damn shows to just end already...

Ha! This is why i watch *one* show 'live' and dl the rest. I have no clue when shows are on, forget the date when the come back after a hiatus, and really hate it when they switch times or days or whatever.

Dl'ing is just much better, plus - no commercials!

I sympathize with this, OP! I just realized that NONE of the shows I've been watching over the past year is cancelled or ending. And I like all the shows I watch but I was looking forward to having SOME time freed up.

I only watch a couple of shows live (and those only because I watch with someone else). The rest I DVR. Some I get to the night they air, some the next night, some on the weekend, some I get very behind on. I watch the ones I like best/most don't want to get spoiled on first and don't mind as much with the others. Of course, sometimes, me saving a bunch of episodes to watch later means I never end up getting back to/finishing a show. Which was the case with me and Fringe.

I used to be relieved when May sweeps was over because then I had to record less, but then summer shows got really good, so it hasn't been as much of a break in the past few years. Like Longmire starts soon, among others.

On first glance, I couldn't help but wonder who'd been hacking into my computer, because I make a multi-colored excel grid of my shows at the start of every tv season, and it looks almost exactly like what's shown.

On the other hand, I don't have to worry so much anymore about what's on, what's having an episode on a 'special date and time!', what ends at 10:01 so I miss the first minute of the show on at 10, which three shows are on simultaneously when I only have one vcr.

That's because comcast on-demand happened. Almost everything on the major networks (except Criminal Minds and Person of Interest for some reason) shows up there, sometimes a day late, sometimes at midnight on the day it aired. (This is mostly CBS, and this night owl appreciates it.) I never worry about what's on when anymore; when I'm in the mood for tv, I just check the listings and see what there's a new episode of.

(OP's point about avoiding spoilers, though, is the one fly in the ointment; shows I'm in fandom for I pretty much have to watch ASAP.)

This is why I'm so happy not to have TV anymore. That, and they kept cancelling the shows I liked, which is simply frustrating after the first six or seven.

I'm the same.If I forget to dl an episode or to watch it I get kinda anxious and try to avoid spoilers, then my interest starts dropping until I just can't sit through the episode.

It happened with The Walking Dead,I still haven't seen the last two episodes of season 3.
