Religion/religious themes can still be fascinating to people who are atheist or agnostic. Atheist writers (well, the good ones anyway) who write about religion usually aren't going "lol, this is all pointless bullshit but the plebes will lap it up," they're usually of the opinion that religion is a meaningful topic and exploring religious ideas and how they relate to people/humanity/other ideas. They just don't personally believe in god and stuff.

That's what I think, too. The hateful, shit-talking atheists aren't writing any positive tales about religion.

Example: Babylon 5. Especially the S1 ep where each representative race on the station is supposed to present the other ambassadors with their own religion...each ambassador picked THEIR religion; Sinclair led the others down a loooooooooooooooong line of representatives from every religion on Earth that had survived to that date.

I'm not religious but I do believe that there's something out there, and there are certain religious topics that mean a lot to me, and I love it when writers use religion and religious topics in their fiction.

Atheists can do that about as well as anyone else. Although it does become painfully obvious very quickly when anyone writes what they think any given type of religious person is like, rather than bothering to research and give their creations a touch of realism.

Personally, I don't even see that many "surprise nihilism!" endings around anyway when something isn't trying to be ~edgy~ for the sake of being ~edgy~, and it's hardly just atheists who use bad plot devices and make poor narrative choices.

Very well said!

I do not believe in any gods but I am fascinated by religion and mythology. It has an incredibly important role in humanity and is full of amazing metaphors and themes to explore and play with.

Whether or not you personally believe in God, religion taps into a wellspring of really deep, important shit and provides frameworks for it. An atheist who writes it all off as BS or won't touch religion-based themes/narratives because they've got God Cooties all over them is a stupid atheist.
