I wouldn't really consider it to be hypocritical or cheapening anything, unless the specific intent of the work is to preach the views of that religion.

I mean, religion exists, whether or not the individual believes in it. It has a huge impact on our society. And, as a concept, it's still an entirely valid one to play with.
And authors don't have to share the viewpoints of their creations.

If I write a story with racist content or a racist main character, for instance, it doesn't mean I support racism. Nor am I trying to buy the racist crowd.
It just means there are themes in my story of a concept that has existed in the world, and I feel like playing with it in the context of fiction.
