When it comes to Steve/Tony they already had a thriving fanbase based on a very real and very complicated friendship (and occasional rivalry) in the comics. That meant there was a lot of fic and shippers before the movies even came out so that when people got home from seeing Avengers they got online and found a bunch of already written comic-based fic. Or a bunch of shippers that were going to ship it because they read the comics.

And before someone comes in to complain, there is nothing wrong with taking what you love in the comics and playing with it in the movie-verse.

Yeah, I haven't read any of the original comics, I've only seen the movies, but many times the Steve/Tony fic I've seen (that's based on the Marvel-Movie-verse) just doesn't really fit with their characterizations. Just in my opinion.

Lol. In my opinion very little of the fic based in the MCU matches anybody's on screen characterization OR comic characterization, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading some of it or that other people aren't having fun writing it.

I agree with that.

But OP, even in the movie Tony and Steve don't hate each other. They have friction, but that's at a time when there's a supernatural influence and the ENTIRE CAST is yelling at each other. The movie just focused a bit more on Steve and Tony. But there's no reason to think that they actually hate each other.

Yeah, after their fight they worked together to fix the broken engine and then at the end of the movie Steve was worried about Tony and relieved he survived. And then they had a friendly handshake in the park.

Alls I really know is that this one time, Steve, wearing armor, rode in on a white horse and saved a very naked-and-tied-down Tony from a mighty dragon.

Tony then got behind him on the horse (riding "wench") and they rode off into the sunset.

I might be adding in the sunset.

I really freakin love Avengers Prime.

[personal profile] shinysylver 2013-05-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
You mean that time that Steve and Tony were still fighting about the Civil War and then they got sucked into a rainbow with Thor:

And then Tony had his armor taken so he had to be rescued like a damsel by Steve and then they flirted:

And then Tony the damsel rode double on a horse with his knight Sir Steve and they flirted some more:

And then they eventually got home and had hugs:

I love comic canon sometimes.

I like that Thor is still angry as fuck with Tony at this point and even he seems rather approving of the "hug it out" taking place here.

Thor shows his own immense ability to forgive in Invincible Iron Man around this same time with the offers of all the money in Asgard to Tony. In fact in some ways I think that once he forgave Tony he never looked back unlike Steve who still had issues with trusting Tony (for good reason but still).

That was a great conversation, when IIM was still good instead of....confusing. He basically tells Tony that he knows he's a stupid, foolish arrogant mortal but he trusts him anyway, and especially trusts him to try to make up for the whole Civil War mess.

What I loved best about the conversation is that Tony is honest. He says that he would still make most of the same decisions based on what he knew at the time, that he can't be other than he is. And that is what Thor respects. He respects that Tony owns himself. And of course he sees that Tony is trying to fix it, too.

I really, really love Thor and his ability to be so loyal and understanding. Of course I also cheered when he smacked Tony down the first time they met after he came back to life. :D

It is kinda beautiful. That middle panel is nothing but fanservice, and it's just perfect.

and then they got sucked into a rainbow with Thor

Speaking of perfect, yes, that is how I will describe that moment forever. And I hope you're proud of yourself, because now when I look at that picture, I just hear "What's Going On?" playing on loop.

there is nothing wrong with taking what you love in the comics and playing with it in the movie-verse

There is something wrong if you use it as an excuse to be a misogynist and bash Pepper Potts to destroy the movieverse's canon ship. And plenty of Stony shippers do just that. Stop trying to make excuses for them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
A ship being canon does not mean that you have to like it. Being a misogynistic douchebag is not okay, saying "I don't like Tony/Pepper as a ship and I ship Steve/Tony even in movie canon" is perfectly fine.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't deny some Tony/Steve shippers are misogynist as fuck, but as soon as you complain about "destroying the movieverse ship" I'm going to lose all interest because nothing I do as a shipper is literally destroying anything.

Added to the fact that it is actually okay to dislike MCU Pepper for a whole raft of reasons including the fact that she doesn't serve any purpose in MCU except to exist via Tony (it was pointed out to me recently that all we know about Pepper outside of her work at SI is that she's allergic to strawberries and likes shoes and we don't know anything else about her past or her interests outside the company other than that) which is troubling as all get out and does a huge disservice to the character Pepper was in the comics.

What pisses me off is this dichotomy of either you defend Pepper to the hilt or your a misogynist, and if finding interest in a gay ship rather than fawning over the boring as fuck canon ship makes me a misogynist by the standards of tumblr (because let's be honest that's what you're basing this opinion on since that's where I see the majority of this BS) then fine. I didn't used to need to justify my subtext to protect the heterosexuality of a canon and I'm sure as fuck not going to start now. I'm also not going to suddenly start liking a character that I deeply dislike just because she's a woman as though doing so gives me my stripes as a "proper feminist" engaging with fandom. Fuck that noise. And yes I mad, I'm so tired of this sanctimonious shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*or you're a misogynist. So mad that I forgot how to words.
