I'm an atheist but most of the characters I write have some sort of religious belief, because more people have some sort of religious belief. I also write characters who are a different ethnicity or gender or sexual orientation or class or nationality than me, because tbh no one wants to read a story where all of the characters are obviously the author.

I have also written about: a city that was completely cut off from the rest of human civilization, incredibly awkward alien contact, suburban Ontario cannibals, Communist genetically altered flying squirrel people, giant bugs, haunted telephones and, most recently, a were-raccoon. None of these are things that I actually believe exist IRL but can manage to write with a modicum of imagination and empathy. Because fiction.

When I write on religious themes, I feel I have some obligation to get it right and not stereotype and so on, even when religious writers consistently fail to get atheists right. But writing a world where everyone believes what I believe seems so horribly limiting that I can't believe anyone would honestly suggest it.

even when religious writers consistently fail to get atheists right.

Can I just say, THIS

A note to TV writers: all atheists are not Gregory House, please&thanks.

Or Temperance Brennan, or the obnoxious evil guy on SG: Universe, or the cynical mayor on Outcasts (although he's better than most.)

Which obnoxious evil guy on SGU?

Oh, Rush. Who probably shouldn't be called _evil_ because it's a show where almost everyone was grey.

I was wondering. Also, atheism as a concept is somewhat complicated in the SG universe, considering the Goa'uld, the Ori, the Ancients, the Asgard, Daniel Jackson ... When most of your baddie roster is made up of people claiming to be various forms of deities, some with abilities to back it up, theism vs atheism gets real complicated real quick.

Yeah, the conversation wasn't about "super-powered alien things that might be confused with god" but "gee, we're about to die a horrible meaningless death a long way from home, do you think there's an transcendental omnipotent omnipresent god that's going to catch us?"

The opinions of the dialogue were "no," and "probably not" as I recall.

It's been such a long time since I saw SGU (a series I wasn't terribly fond with, tbh), but in the second season wasn't one of the plot points that there was a message from God (or some kind of intelligent force) at the beginning of the universe? And some kind of planet that some people thought was put there by God? And I know in the first season some of the (random) crew members prayed the All Father when they thought they were fucked.

Yeah, I seem to remember reading reviews that they went there eventually, but I never got that far. Probably part of the long dark night of science fiction television where you had three different series wrap up with a YHVH ex machina as an alternative to, "it was all a holographic simulation."
