You can't write about something unless you believe in it? That rules out ... most political systems, most religious systems, 60% of 'common knowledge', pretty much everything from genre fiction, and ... basically anything outside of a personal autobiography, doesn't it?

I mean, tell people to respect their subject matter when they're writing, yes. But don't flat-out tell people they can only write about what they personally know, because that leads to a very boring literary landscape very quickly, and also encourages people to think exclusively inside their cultural/religious/political boxes. None of these things ends well.

I wonder if OP only writes about people who share their sexual orientation/cultural background/race/age group/etc.

My money is on "they don't".
