Growing up, I seem to remember a lot of shows where the male main character would end up fighting a female antagonist. If he didn't just find some way to debilitate her, it usually ended up in UST/kissing/etc.

In lots of games I also remember lots of female antagonists falling for the main dude, often right before their redemption through death.

So, I'll blame that. Although I also suspect it's just a lot easier and sometimes a lot more fun to write stories about relationships when the relationship itself is the conflict that needs to be figured out.
