I don't really know how well Reek would translate, but I agree they could have very much slimmed down the torture scenes and conveyed an ominous tone and everything we needed to know through implication and rumor.

Maybe I don't know enough about what can be done through visual media and what can't, but I'm pretty sure I've seen shows (and hell, comics) that have had really creepy torture scenes without showing the actual disfigurement.

Piled on top of Ros's fate, it was really way too much and an obvious shock tactic. It was really unpleasant.
