Haha! Bible slash must really piss you off then, OP.

And about cheapening religion for profit: you really want to tell me that religion (aka institutionalized deism) is NOT all about money (and power)? Take a good long look at the Pope for example and then ask yourself how many hungry people he could have fed only by using the money that went into one pair of his shoes.
What about all the trinkets religious people buy? What about all the money people have spent throughout time to buy themselves out of sin? What about faith healing, the pilgrimage industry, the money that goes into FUCKING BUILDING SABBATH-FRIENDLY OVENS?

Religion has always been "cheap". If you want to believe that some god created life on Earth that's totally cool with me, but please don't confuse deism with theism and religion with a non-profit organization.

You're talking about Benedict, correct? Because this is one of the reasons I'm cautiously optimistic about Pope Francis: he actually seems to give a crap about the poor. Hopefully he can can walk the walk instead of just talking about it, though...

ayrt

Yes, I was talking about him. Maybe I should have pointed that out. Most of the Popes that came before him weren't any better, though.
Living in an almost literally golden palace while blessing the poor each year makes me shake my head.

I agree with you 100%. The previous Popes needed a serious reality check.

da

So, wait, are you guys saying the new grand poobah of the Catholics said he's going to live like a normal guy? Really? (I'm not Catholic and don't follow religious news.)

lol i wish. But if you did follow the news, you would see that his actions suggest a sense of humility not seen in other popes. He pays for his own hotel bill, washed the feet of women/Muslims/gay people, takes the bus, refused to stand on the customary platform above the archbishops, asked the Catholics to pray for him instead of the other way around, turned down the grand papal apartment on the top floor of the Vatican's Apolistic palace, and wears much simpler attire than the previous popes. My expectations of the Vatican and Catholic hierarchy in general are usually very low, but so far Francis seems to be off to a good start.

Just adding a morsel of knowledge: Pope Francis was involved with the right-wing dictatorship in Argentina, denied help to left-wing prosecuted priests and social workers, and helped cover up the kidnapping and relocating in rich right-wing homes of babies from politically prosecuted women.

So yeah, all that stuff about paying his bills is nice, but nobody should be trusting Papa Francisco anytime soon.

Most of the discussion is in Spanish documents and media and I don't feel like googling it up for you, but basically there's even an ongoing acussation for the illegal disappearance of two leftist priests Bergoglio turned his back on. Also, the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (mothers and grandmothers of the kidnapped babies) have repeatedly manifested how Bergoglio never lifted a finger to help them during the Argentinean dictatorship.

Here's something, see if you can google-translate it: http://www.elplural.com/2013/03/14/las-madres-de-la-plaza-de-mayo-la-iglesia-de-bergoglio-es-la-de-la-derecha-la-que-apana-a-los-curas-violadores/

I laughed when I read OP's secret. Religion is a huge cash-cow, I have no clue where she/he got the idea that religion is actually 'non-profit'.
