Re: How TV affects people?
Films and television affect the way we view the world, what we think is normal. So when television and films show mostly white men with power, we get "programed" to think that it is how the world is.
And because television is something most of us watch a lot of, it affects what we think of as the norm, we watch commercials and they do affect us:
- Our children watch shows where adults are useless and they might end up thinking that way.
- Teenagers watch theirs shows and films where the girl have to change her looks to be accepted, where getting the boy and the right clothes are all that should matter to her.
- University aged people, watch films and televison programes where our situation is reflected, where girls are objects and men have the power. We watch romantic comedies where the men always gets the girl and the girl is a passive bystander, and if she have a job she always needs a man by her side.
Television tells us that women in power are only in power because they have someone helping them or because they are cold hearted bitches that only cares for themselves, and when they meet the right man they will want a family. When women are strict or takes charge she is a bitch or bossy, when a man does the same it is admired.
Men on the other hand and especially white men, constantly gets told in media that they are the hero and the boss, they get the girls and save the world and/or the love interest. They have sex without being judged, instead they are admired.
Men can be anything in movies and films! They are astronauts, scientist and World leaders, they are heroes and even when they are the bad guy, people will still admire them.
So what media is telling us with having 70% men and 30% women, is that men are worth more, they do more and they are larger in number than women. Women aren't portrayed in media as much because we are supposed to be housewives or damsels in distress, or possibly a bad girl whom have sex and kills toddlers, and don't get redeemed.
