Like another anon said, I actually think that when it comes to most Westerners, most atheists and casually religious people tend to have the same experience of perspective to draw from when it comes to religion and religious themed works.

So, I think it really is more about how people let their personal biases shape a story and whether that's good or bad and how it impacts what they're writing. Personally, I just think it's great when people do interesting things with religion in fiction, it pleases me that people can still find and create their own meaning from any religion even on a purely secular level.

Plus, I think a lot of atheists or even just very scientifically-minded individuals offer their own insight into things in pretty creative ways, tbh.
