[TW]: Cracked.com's "Ten-Minute Suicide Guide"

http://www.cracked.com/article_15658_the-ten-minute-suicide-guide.html

I just wanted to share this because he makes a lot of very good points. Although I've never been convinced by the whole "You never know what's waiting around the corner!" argument. I mean, I get the point of it, but what happens if in ten years your life goes to shit?

I actually found the whole thing pretty offensive.

I'm not sure what people expect when they write about their suicidal thoughts to a humor columnist at Cracked.

I expected pretty much what I found. And I found it offensive. Not sure what your problem is. Not like I'm on a tear to take the article down or something.

I guess the reactions people have to that page can be variable, and I know most of my severe depression is a very blurry memory, but I'm pretty sure that page saved my life at least once.

I haven't reread it in a while because I like to avoid reading about topics such as suicide given the choice so I don't know what my reaction to it would be now, but it was somewhat helpful to me then.

...

Huh.

I'd complain that the author doesn't understand statistics, but I'm not convinced he understands anything else, either.

Like, for example, that many people contemplating suicide are not exactly doing it in a rational, logical frame of mind. That telling people how common suicide methods fail isn't going to deter anyone motivated, it'll just make them more precise. That analogy to murder is only one of the reasons suicide is considered a sin, and several of the others are more... esoteric. That it's extremely stupid to try to describe the experience after life if there is no afterlife, because hello, there is no experience, that's the point. Sheesh.

And the whole poop thing was just STUPID.

SA

Apparently from what other people are saying, sometimes it successfully deters people from committing suicide.

That's the important part, so... criticism mostly withdrawn.

When I'm starting to get suicidal, I can actually feel myself losing my grip on logic, and one of the ways I bring myself back is to think about how it would go realistically. I know myself and I know if I attempted, it would just be a painful mess that left me worse off than I was before. I'm sure thinking about the afterlife works for other people, and still others might be thinking about how they'll be known after their death, and don't want it to be something gross.

That article stopped me from killing myself. I was going through a rough time and in a very abusive relationship, but reading that article gave me hope. I was laughing and crying at the end of it. By reading the comments section, I can see a lot of people thought the same thing. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it really has helped a lot of us who needed someone to give us a reason to keep going.

Am I the only one who found that shit hilarious?

I came across this while googling the pros and cons of various suicide methods. Sometimes I'm not such a big fan of David Wong, but I think I'll always kind of owe him in a way for writing/publishing that article.

Can I just say how fed up with this bullshit about "hurting the people who like you" I am? I don't give a flying fuck about the goddamn people who like me. I have zero obligations towards them.
