Well, I guess they couldn't exactly call him Figwit officially, so I understand why they changed it, although I'm no fan of mixing languages in compound words (names included). I have to admit I kind of love the whole thing - taking a fan acronym, reading it as a word, taking the constituent parts (I guess? Fig + Wit?), translating them into a name that could be Elvish and making it the character's canonical name - and find it kind of hilarious and awesome.
