As opposed to...?

a.) Pretty much all professional fiction these days is for profit. Religious themes are often used, by both religious and non-religious people alike.

b.) Almost everyone writes about something they don't necessarily have a personal connection to (i.e. straight people writing about gays, whites writing about minorities, people writing from the perspective of the opposite sex, etc.) Are those themes cheapened?

c.) Not believing in a higher force doesn't mean not respecting religious themes or stories. Religious themes make up a huge part of human society and culture, and a lot of people use them, and some of those people are non-religious. They're not really doing anything more or less than religious people. The only way to argue that agnostics and atheists cheapen religions when they write religious themes is if you also argue that ANYONE who writes about religious themes cheapens religion, regardless of their own personal faith.
