Ever heard the saying "The writing's on the wall"? It's a prime example of what you're saying about everyone having some degree of religion in their lives.

Just so you know, that saying comes from the part of the Book of Daniel where the king of Babylon got out the Jews' ceremonial temple plate-wear to use in a feast. A big shiny hand appeared at the feast and wrote on a wall something that translates as basically "You have been judged and found wanting". That night the Medo-Persians invaded the city.
