21. ACTUALLY. What I'm referring to here is Mary Martin(or your actress of choice) is to Peter Pan what Zelda is to Sheik. They're both girls playing a male character. One for the sake of putting on a play. The other for the sake of saving her life/kingdom.

Ah, you're using the "role" of Peter Pan then. Not the actual character. I understand what you're saying, but it's a totally different ballgame. One is an actress playing a character for a play - wherein you're led to believe she's a boy and forget she is a girl altogether for the sake of enjoying it. Whereas the other is a girl going into hiding/character, yet still, actually a girl beneath a costume.

But they're still both Girls in Boy Costume. Both characters, Peter and Sheik, depend upon the hope that people will assume they're boys.

The bottom line for me is this: She's dressing up as a very particular boy. End of. She's not dressing up as an ambiguous hooded character, she's not putting on pants and hoping to pass for anyone other than Zelda; she's taken on a very specific identity, that of a young Sheikah man named Sheik. She's doing it to save her life and her kingdom, which is more crucial than anything. No one who knew her secret (Impa?) would call Sheik a "she" and risk blowing everything any more than anyone on stage with Mary would risk calling Peter a "she" and blow the show.

But you, the player, still know its a girl. Crossdressing doesn't change your gender. Nor does other characters calling her a 'him' magically give her a penis, just an implied one. Peter, regardless of who plays him, is MALE. The character isn't a girl dressed as a boy, pretending to a boy. Lemme state that again, PETER (the character itself, NOT the actor/actress playing him) is NOT a GIRL (canonly) pretending to be a GUY (canonly). Sheik is Zelda plus pants and fake chest. Sheik, canonly, is still a woman. In pants. And fake man-chest of awesome. At the end of the day? That's still a chick. You shouldn't get all bent out of shake because of the reality that she IS a she.

I can understand preferring male pronouns in fics, especially for the manga-canon (which cannot be applied backwards to game canon. They're two different things), but to the point where you're bitchy at Nintendo? Who MADE Sheik and Zelda and whatever connection and/or possible sex-change there in? And therefore have the final say on whether or not it IS a chick (which it is)? Just makes you look rather dumb and angry in my eyes. Not a pretty combination.

But you agree that she's pretending to be a GUY. So. Why are we fighting exactly? (Seriously, there are fans who wont even do that much. Just like there are fans who won't even admit that's even ZELDA under all that.)

I see now I wasn't very clear. I'm not saying Sheik the Character in the Zelda series is biologically male. Sheik the Character in the Zelda series is Zelda in disguise. I'm saying Sheik the Character that Zelda is Playing in the World Of Hyrule is a male, or as male as a fictional identity can get, because he isn't a real person, but no one else knows that, so as far as Ruto and anyone else who meets him is concerned, he's just this guy. There are no Y chromosomes or penises (penii?) involved.

I just think of it from Zelda's point of view. If she's going to through all this trouble to look like a guy, Sheik deserves male pronouns.

And for the record, I'm not bitchy at nintendo. I'm bitchy at the fans. I consider SSBM an unfortunate slip up that isn't true to the source material, but it gets extra points for giving Zelda's Sheik form a deeper sounding voice.

...see? Now if you'd put it like THAT in your secret? I wouldn't 've opened my big trap and made an ass of myself. I still think the Peter reference is still pushing it, but there really isn't anyone to compare Sheik to without it being a stretch.

Btw, you handled my snarky reply veeeery maturely and I therefore you are now more than alright in my book. And I do take most of that snarky back.

...wow, and that reply just proves I can't type worth a shit.

I think the pronouns could be debatable depending on the POV. If the story is written in Zelda's POV while she's dressed as Sheik, it should be acceptable for the pronoun to be 'she,' because that's how Zelda probably sees herself. It could also work if it was Link's POV and he already knew that Zelda was Sheik. He probably wouldn't refer to Zelda as 'he.'

It's kinda like Ranma.

*reads everything*

I see what you're trying to say. And on that level, I understand what you were saying, but yes, it came across a little wrong. (But then it's a bit hard to get everything out there in a tiny secret! ;D) Sheik is meant to be male, and for the record, I never thought anything different. I'm just glad that you understand Sheik is Zelda in disguise and that they're one and the same. So many people out there who think they're two completely seperate people.
