Personally I never found either of them at all attractive except when Raphael was in a woman's body. Now that was sexy.

(Straight white woman here, btw.)

Yeah, that actress was definitely hot. (Another straight white woman chiming in.)

To be fair, Lucifer is more human acting that Raphael. This makes him a much more sympathetic villain.

True. The OP might have a point about the racism though. I mean, there's a part of fandom fawning over one-shot angels like Inias while Raphael ha a full storyline and no one's stanning over him

You did see a lot more of Lucifer being seductive, metaphorically speaking -- showing off his persuasive side, arguing his point of view, "join me, and together" blah blah blah. Raphael was more of a he came, he saw, he smited type. Lucifer understood and played to humans more than Raphael, and consequently reads as a more relatable character than Raphael, even though I think they're equally hostile to humans and equally likely to burn the world because someone hurt their feelings.

So, I don't think race is the only factors. One of the factors, yes. I'm sure Raphael would have more fans if played by a pretty white guy.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And fangirls loooove that Draco-in-leather-pants Miltonesque Satan archetype. "He's just a tortured soul! I can CHANGE him! Loki is my woobie!"

I don't think this is a case of black character vs. white character. Rather it's stiff, boring actor versus the dynamic Mark Pellegrino. Because Lucifer was boring when Jared played him. (Sorry, Jared) But Pellegrino is so much fun to watch. He can do sympathetic, charming monster so well. (Come on, admit it. You could see yourself having a blast with his Lucifer even though you knew afterward you were going straight to hell.) I was just bored with Raphael because Raphael looked bored himself. I can't even remember a single line he said but I remember Lucifer's line because of Pellegrino's delivery.

I didn't care for either of them. Not my types. Plus Lucifer festered.

Plus Lucifer festered.

LOL! Too true.

I liked Raphael (both versions). I think people didn't care much about Raphael because he wasn't shippable enough. Lucifer is very shippable with Sam, but Raphael not so much.

I do think people have a tendency to over look characters of colour however, so I think your end point is valid.

I haven't watched SPN since season 5, at which point Raphael was mostly a force of nature who'd racked up a very impressive bodycount mostly offscreen, so I don't know what his story is or how he's getting treated by the fandom these days.

If we're talking a powerful, creepy and tragic angel played by a black man, though, Uriel. I still think he had one of the most powerful stories among the angel cast. Lucifer was out to screw Daddy and make his brother love him again, Zachariah was a pissy little psychopath of a politician, most of the other archangels outside of Raphael had pissed off to emo away eternity. Uriel was a soldier and a fanatic who'd been betrayed, who'd turned to Lucifer to set it right, who'd betrayed and murdered his brothers in turn for the sake of his new vision. He died trying to convince a brother he'd betrayed to join him, because he genuinely believed it was the best choice they had left.

Beats the hell out of Lucifer, is all I'll say. Don't know what happened to Raphael.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my fuck, I loved Uriel so much

I liked the both of them for different reasons though I really liked Raphael's voice, I could listen to him talk all day. I wont disagree that his popularity may very well have been different if he had been played by a pretty white-man but I wont count it as the sole factor.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen fans seriously call Lucifer sympathetic. They seem to like him because he's had a few funny scenes, but still think of him as a villain. I'm also not sure about comparing Raphael to Castiel, since Castiel's first character arc was about him choosing humanity. I like Raphael as a villain, and it would've been nice to see more of female Raphael.

That said, it's really nothing new for people to express sympathy for Satan as a character (in the Bible or elsewhere.) It's not a really sensible, and probably not well-received, but it's been said long before Supernatural.

I stopped watching after season 5, but I never liked Lucifer, and I think Raphael's actor has bug eyes. I didn't find either of them attractive or worth stanning from what I got from seasons 4 and 5.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, SPN has mad race issues in addition to it's gender issues. And this is coming from someone who likes it!

I don't know the fandom, but yeah fandom is generally as bad about ignoring men of color as they are women.

1. Fandom SJWs (to use your term) do call out racism on the part of fans, SPN fans included. You obviously weren't watching the show when Cassie was introduced *low cackle of 8 years of SPN fandom induced madness*

2. Raphael was in 6 episodes, spread over to different actors. Castiel's been a regular since season 4 (not to mention the fact his character was desperately latched onto by fans so he could become part of alternative ship to Wincest, a not small part of his popularity). Lucifer was the big bad across an entire season on top of being freakin' Lucifer - you know, the big bad of Christian theology? He's been being woobified since Milton Lost Paradise, if ya know what I mean.

You can't expect to compare these three characters and claim Raphael's unpopularity is because of racism. You could call out the choices of the writers of SPN in including POC characters, but not the reactions of the fans in this case.

3. If you're a troll, I hope you enjoyed your tasty treats from me.

4. I accidentally wrote 'analternative' in the second paragraph. It was awesome.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I really dislike the angels as characters - their attitude just rubs me the wrong way.
However, I think they are the scariest, evilest monsters on SPN and I can appreciate their role in the narrative.

I didn't like either.Lucifer may be hot and ~~~a tortured person~~~ but I was sick of him in season 5.That trope gets old fast.Season 7 Lucifer was a lot more interesting to me,he was actually tormenting Sam and seemed closer to what I'd imagine him to be like. And Raphael was played better by that lady, the dude was kinda lacking imo.

But IA,there are definitely racism issues within the show and fandom.

Mark Pellegrino is the fugliest of all the angels. I can't believe he's like what, the second most popular of them?

Worthier angels:

Zachariah
Uriel
Anna
Raphael
Balthazar
Gabriel
Every other angel on the show

I have no idea who either of these guys are but the guy on the left is actually about 434934934934 times hotter than the guy on the right.

Just, y'know, stating facts.
