[Jill Valentine/Resident Evil]

You hated her in all incarnations, or just when she was a mind-wiped Umbrella drone in RE:5? She was pretty boss in the earlier games even if a tube top and miniskirt ARE impractical as shit to wear in a zombie apocalypse.

In my head she was caught off-guard on date night or something. I... really can't see any other possible reason she'd be dressed like that.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much all of her incarnations were pretty terrible. If anything, she was more tolerable as an Umbrella ghoul.

But she was in SFOD-D, man!

....Even though women aren't allowed in SFOD-D. Way to do your research, guys.

Hmmm, if that's your body type, how about Sergeant Calhoun from Wreck it Ralph? Or is that one of the "no interest" ones?

Oh god ♥ Calhoun cosplayers are the best until I find my next the best but still the best.

OP! Are you there? Go fall in love with WIR and Calhoun :U

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Go fall in love with" haha I love that <3

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
FUCK YEAH CALHOUN.

That is all. :>

I've never seen the film, but I've seen her picture and we have the exact same hair style. I may need to check this out...

It's a good movie besides.

is there a way for me to suggest that you should maybe contemplate your gender identity and read some trans* stuff without seeming insensitive in either direction? if so, pretend I said it here

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've done a lot of research on the subject and have come to the conclusion that I'd never be able to afford a proper transition in a billion years. My only solution at this point is to try to get to a part of my life where I'm comfortable in my skin and I feel like therapy is the only other solution. Which is also expensive :C

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Therapy doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. If you live near a university, they may offer community counseling services by their psychology doctoral students for example. Community resources for people struggling with gender identity issues could also be available through your local GLBT-type center.

Of course, none of that is totally useful if you live somewhere a bit more isolated :/

"In fact, I can't think of ANY female character I'd feel passionately enough about to put the effort into :/"

well there's your problem

'As a social experiment'

I feel like those words can only end in tears. don't do it :c

In all seriousness, though, if you would be uncomfortable cosplaying a female character than you shouldn't force yourself to do it just because it might be better received than the costumes you like doing.

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-05-15 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Uh....

That hasn't been my experience at all, as a crossplayer. Honestly: just go as one half of (or find someone go as the other half as well) a popular slash pairing.

You will get mobbed. Hell, when I did my Seishirou cosplay I was all but tackled by fangirls, got recognized everywhere, won multiple awards... I have to say I got more attention than the vast majority of women dressed up as their own gender, no matter how provocatively.

That said, there are a couple of other ways to get noticed in a male costume, if that's not your bag:

-Be a very attractive man or a woman who can approximate it (abs? androgynous face with nice cheekbones?) and dress provocatively (same as the women who dress do it)
-Make a really, really complicated and/or impressive costume, especially if it involves an armour set (this goes for female characters, too, but they're less likely to have a cool armour set and more likely to be in boob plate or a chainmail bra). Nobody cares that the gender of the person inside the amazing Spees Mureehn armour is so long as it's accurate, trust me

So, what kind of dudes have you been going as? Because if it's the attention you'd like, I could make some suggestions.

(Also it goes without saying that if you cosplay for the attention, and not just the fun, you should absolutely pick someone you very closely resemble. You've been doing that, eh?)

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't just about the attention, I do what I do because I'm passionate about the characters. Maybe it's just the area that I'm in? I don't get completely ignored, but people tend to be a bit stand-offish towards me. I've been a part of a few popular yaoi duos, such as Vash & Wolfwood and Dante & Vergil, but it's pretty hit and miss.

Re: OP

Huh. Maybe it's the region, but I've crossplayed at numerous conventions all across the West coast, from Vancouver to LA, and even abroad in Japan (hah well not abroad anymore) and it has always been very well received. Sure, attention and awards might be expected at Yaoi Con for going as a popular slash couple, but I and my Subaru won at regular conventions, as well? I've never encountered a hostile attitude, personally. It doesn't hurt to do a little fanservice, though, either ;3

It goes without saying, I should expect, but do you resemble Vash/Wolfwood or Dante/Vergil? Not just in face, but in stature? It's one of those unfortunate truths of cosplay that people seem to give a million more shits about character resemblance (and conventional attractiveness) than costuming, at times. Our group's Wolfram was slim and cute and a natural blond, but had an admittedly rather half-assed outfit, yet was showered with attention by fangirls, while much better-dressed, but wigged or chubby or unattractive Wolframs were ignored.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the Joy/the Boss from the Metal Gear series? Her sneak suit looks a lot like Jill's outfit there so I don't know if that would sway you for or against the costume
ariakas: (Default)

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-05-15 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this. The Boss is my annoyed feminist/gender issues litmus test. Even if you hate virtually all other female characters, but like the Boss, you may just be a feminist with extremely high standards annoyed with the way female characters are presented in the media. If you hate even the Boss, man, you got gender issues to deal with.
