I agree with you that that's the IDEA of his character, but I think it just didn't work. Sometimes good ideas don't translate well onto screen, and Sherlock's Moriarty is one of the best examples of that.

AYRT

I don't know, I think it worked. In that the Moriarty I saw onscreen is genuinely the kind of person I could believe would commit horrible and sadistic crimes for other people for no better reason than shits and giggles, the kind of person who would get twistedly attached to his opponent and go completely and chaotically off the rails in order to destroy them. He works in that he fits the story, I think is what I mean.

Whether or not that particular story is one that works for you, and whether or not that story fits with the original conceptualisation of the character, is a different pair of questions.

That's what I'm thinking.

Intellectually, I get the character, and it obviously works for a lot of people. It just makes me cringe to the point of being completely thrown out of the story.

Yeah, same here. I get what they're going for, it just doesn't work for me, for a lot of reasons.

da

Thirding this.

Agreed. That analysis of what the character was supposed to be was excellent, but I don't think the actor managed to pull it off.
