In that the Moriarty I saw onscreen is genuinely the kind of person I could believe would commit horrible and sadistic crimes for other people for no better reason than shits and giggles, the kind of person who would get twistedly attached to his opponent and go completely and chaotically off the rails in order to destroy them. He works in that he fits the story, I think is what I mean.
Whether or not that particular story is one that works for you, and whether or not that story fits with the original conceptualisation of the character, is a different pair of questions.
