At first I honestly believed that "Watson as an Asian woman" will be just another forced gimmick, something to separate this new show from BBC's Sherlock. I suspected that it still could be amazing, because... Lucy Liu, but I couldn't (couldn'tcouldn'tcouldn't) imagine what she had done with this character. Now I see her as a real Watson, and an amazing one.
On the other hand, I'm still trying (trying very hard) to get used to Johnny Lee Miller's Holmes. I don't know what I'm missing, maybe he isn't elegant enough, or asshole enough (funny because as far as I can remember, Jeremy Brett's Holmes wasn't as asshole as Cumberbatch's/RDJ's tend to be), or... I don't know, and it really bugs me, because I kind of like the character I see on TV, but I can't really see him as a Sherlock Holmes... at least not yet.
Plus, I agree with your "generic crime series" paragraph word for word.
