I'm sorry, I don't even watch this show and don't really care, but they look like they coordinated their outfits and that's adorable.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
They do that a lot, no joke! In one episode, it was particularly noticeable since they were both wearing the (IMO ugly, which is why I noticed it) combination of dark grey and cobalt blue.

Given how often Sherlock picks out her clothes because she's sleeping and he's really eager to go investigate a thing, this is entirely plausible.

I went into Elementary not expecting too much, but I ended up ADORING IT.

I watched initially for Lucy's Joan, but JLM as Sherlock has completely captured my heart. I love the relationship between Joan and Sherlock. I also love Joan's character arc in discovering her new career path and I think the show does a fabulous job of portraying Sherlock's struggle with addiction.

This so hard. I went in expecting it to be bad just because it was an American remake of a British show. Now I think its closer to the canon stories than Sherlock.

This, this, all of this.

I was gobsmacked when a friend of my claimed to have watched it and said she thought JLM wasn't a good actor. Piss off, friend, he's brilliant in this. I love both of their characters, and their platonic dynamic so much.

Different strokes and all that. I love Elementary, although I've never been a big Holmes fan before. And I don't like procedurals, but I like Elementary's cases just fine...and I adore both of them and the supporting cast too.

Plus the Elementary writers Twitter is just great.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
this is the first Sherlock that i've ever honestly liked. besides the mouse one. so more for me!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-22 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically you only like it if it's not actually Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I love both of them. Joan doesn't take shit from anyone and JLM's Sherlock portrayal has heart. Just wondering, why didn't you like JLM's portrayal?

I like JLM as Sherlock just fine, but I LOVE Lucy as Joan and don't think the show would hold the same appeal without her. (Well, it wouldn't for me anyway.)

I like Elementary, but I agree with the "generic crime series". I'm still waiting for at least one clever case for Sherlock to resolve.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at how wrong you are!

j/k IDGAF if this Holmes feels like the "real" Holmes or not -- I just love this character. He could be named John Smith and I'd still love the shit out of him. I lovelovelove his moments of vulnerability and deep caring for his friend, and how they are not portrayed (either by the writing or the acting) as weakness.

I'm very behind on Elementary (like most shows tbh), but Lucy Liu as Watson is the reason I really like the show. Actually, I really like it because their relationship feels very equal, like they're both equals, and I love their relationship for it. I went in it for Joan Watson but stayed (to an extent, I really am behind) for the both of them.

Spoilers for "The Rat Race."

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-05-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you sure you're really paying attention? I've found some the murders in Elementary even more complicated than the ones in the Doyle canon. Especially the one where the secretary kills people and makes it look like an accident. I mean, the deductions sounded like it could've been lifted verbatim from a book. It felt a bit weird at the end when the secretary didn't shoot Sherlock right away, but maybe that was just because she had never actually had to kill someone directly in front of her. I watch a lot of crime dramas, so I can usually tell which direction they're going in, and that was one of the only episodes where I was surprised at every turn.

Same here. I was really sceptical about fem!Watson, but I ended up liking her. But his Sherlock ... I don't want to say he's terrible, but he does't work for me at all. Reason I stopped watching the show after a few eps.

inb4 "butthurt Cumberbatch fan", no, I'm not a huge fan of any of the other Sherlock incarnations. I like some, dislike others, but I'm not fanatical about any ~one true Sherlock Holmes~.

I loved Watson and was fairly meh about Sherlock but then he grew on me somehow

now everything is awesome forever

If the old "cheesy" movies you were referring to are the ones with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, those were AWESOME.

I think all those people going "I loved his Sherlock Holmes because he was ~likeable~" are missing the point. Sherlock Holmes was many things, but he never was portrayed as a particularly likeable character. Therefore - at least for me - a likeable Sherlock Holmes is not a good one.

zserb: Johnny Depp's slightly disgusted grimace, and magnifying glass from "Sleepy Hollow" Text: CSI (crime show)

[personal profile] zserb 2013-05-15 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Am I making secrets in my sleep, or what? (Except that I usually adore genderswap.)

At first I honestly believed that "Watson as an Asian woman" will be just another forced gimmick, something to separate this new show from BBC's Sherlock. I suspected that it still could be amazing, because... Lucy Liu, but I couldn't (couldn'tcouldn'tcouldn't) imagine what she had done with this character. Now I see her as a real Watson, and an amazing one.

On the other hand, I'm still trying (trying very hard) to get used to Johnny Lee Miller's Holmes. I don't know what I'm missing, maybe he isn't elegant enough, or asshole enough (funny because as far as I can remember, Jeremy Brett's Holmes wasn't as asshole as Cumberbatch's/RDJ's tend to be), or... I don't know, and it really bugs me, because I kind of like the character I see on TV, but I can't really see him as a Sherlock Holmes... at least not yet.

Plus, I agree with your "generic crime series" paragraph word for word.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Elementary is my favourite Holmes adaptation of the recent ones partially because it's so far removed from the source material. That way it's easier for me to concentrate on the show's own merits and not well it follows the originals. I can't stand the RDJ movies because they keep rubbing it in my face that LOOK THIS IS HOLMES LOOK and showing me some guy who isn't very like the book Holmes, or even exceptionally bright, but just happens to be surrounded by absolute idiots. Also because they, like BBC's Sherlock, fucked up Irene Adler's character. I'm reserving judgement on Elementary's take on Adler until we learn more.

All that said, Granada's adaptation with Jeremy Brett remains the best adaptation in my book.
