This. It looks like he's patting her cheek? I can only envision that as being stilted and awkward. Like she's too busy sniffling to notice how forced his smile is and how he's trying to feign interest while touching her as little as possible.

Sherlock is one character I would not want to come cheer me up, because I have a feeling that if he tried, he would make it so much worse, and if he wasn't trying, he'd just be mean.

Why don't you picture it as Sherlock pulling up a facade as a the best bet to get some clues out of this girl? That's in character-ish iirc

I'm sorry I can't find the original post but it's a gif of a crying girl and the main characters of popular fandoms cheering her up by hugging/kissing her and the message is that fandoms help people cope with the problems they face irl.

That actually sounds like a good idea, in outline. It's just ... Sherlock may not have been the best choice of character? I mean, even John is more likely. Sherlock doesn't really deal with that sort of thing.

Yeah, I get that. Maybe it works better in context. It's just that presented with a flat image of Sherlock comforting someone, it breaks the suspension of disbelief a little.

I remember seeing that post, but I can't seem (read: am too lazy) to find it right now. It's basically Sherlock analyzing her situation to show that it wasn't as bad as she might thing it was.
