Tumblr. God, Tumblr. yourfaveisproblematic is my favourite. It mixes genuine, real concerns like homophobia, racism, misogyny etc. and all sorts with shit like 'appropriation of cornrows' and it is just RIDICULOUS. It's a shame, because it has a good concept and I can see how calling out popular celebs on their problematic behaviour is important, but it's such a mess, my God, and it really undermines the important stuff they say :(

And I saw an essay last week that basically said if you dislike a female character- ANY female character- you are an enormous sexist and you should feel bad and go write fic for them. Like, seriously, what. There are definitely problems with sexism in fandom, but the solution is not 'like every female character because they're female', jfc. Again, a shame because the essay had some really good points but it just lost the plot towards the end.

Haha what. Isn't liking a character -just- because they're female fetishization of some kind, though? That can be pretty damaging of itself.

These people, I swear.

'appropriation of cornrows'

Haha what

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
THERE IS LITERALLY A PICTURE OF TAYLOR SWIFT WITH CORNROWS WHEN SHE LOOKS ABOUT 12 AND THIS IS OFFENSIVE.

I AM USING ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT IS RIDICULOUS:

This picture:

http://media.tumblr.com/fc73f2c784472b65a5d45a2bc08a3046/tumblr_inline_mkgjm14dvP1qz4rgp.jpg

is genuinely given as a reason why Taylor Swift is 'problematic'.
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-05-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
And it's like, I can't dismiss all of what they have to say because much of what is there is genuinely problematic but then they just go overboard and throw in hairstyles and shit

I wanna assume these people aren't from the South cause a lot of people of every race wear their hair like that here (and if you're poor and your family can't afford to buy shampoo all the time don't laugh my family had this problem putting your hair in cornrows is great cause you don't have to shampoo your hair for awhile)
ext_81845: mashmyre cello facepalming, from the anime zz gundam (facepalm)

OH GOD why did you show my this tumblr I mean, stuff like joking about dudes being male prostitutes is apparently offensive now

Also, this is apparently "brownface" (And if you don’t think this is brownface, please look through the rest of the slideshow and notice how her skin is significantly lighter in most of the other shots. It was almost definitely darkened with makeup in this one.):

Also didn't realize white people couldn't dress like Cleopatra OMG THAT IS OFFENSIVE TO ANCIENT CULTURES THAT NO LONGER EXIST (she was also born to Greek parents IIRC)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah man, Frida Kahlo is so brown!!! with her German father and half-spanish mother!! brown! offensive!!
ext_81845: kai shiden w/ an awkward expression, from the manga gundam: the origin (awkward)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-05-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize she was supposed to be Frida Kahlo. I mean, I guess I could see how that could be offensive but I had no idea who she was supposed to be, she only looked slightly darker too, like the lighting in the photo was different or maybe she had tanned. Yeah, OMG MEXICANS ARE ALL BROWN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IT'S NOT A MULTICULTURAL COUNTRY LIKE THE USA, NO PEOPLE OF EUROPEAN ORIGIN AT ALL WHAT IS MONTERREY

Damn that reminds me I can't get a tan, I get kinda brown and that might offend someone (most likely my skin when it gets cancer later on)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuckadiddle-doo. Why do people think you have to be freaking DARK CHOCOLATE BROWN to count as Not White? There are plenty of light-skinned non-caucasians. Shit, I've seen straight up brothers who'd outshine a honky on a dark night.
