Re: Cars!

I have an '05 Elantra that I bought in 07. I've recently been told that if you take care of it, you can probably get a good 10-13 years out of it. Mechanically, I haven't had any problems with it, but the other thing I've heard about Elantra's -- cosmetic things start falling apart after five or six years -- seems to be holding true:

I have to use a steering wheel cover because chunks of mine keep falling off. The mirror that lives in the driver's side sun visor fell out (but I imagine I could glue that back in), and the paint of my back bumper is kind of rubbing off. Plus, a while ago the black strips that line the windshield? One of those started to pop up. It would have been a $200 fix for a tiny piece of plastic clamp, but my dealer was all "Here, let just caulk that down and put this tape over it for a day." The next day I took the tape off and haven't had a problem since.

But like I said, that's all cosmetic for reasonably-priced car that still runs fine and gets good gas mileage (and generally looks fine unless you're really inspecting it). I know another guy who says Toyota and Honda make engines that last forever.
