Cars!

[personal profile] sockpants 2013-05-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not the Pixar movie, actual cars.

I need a new car.

My old-as-balls car finally died, and I've been looking at some new ones. I'd prefer a hatchback, and I'd prefer something cheap, and the Chevy Spark seems to fit the bill. Does anyone have any experience with this car?

I've also been looking at the Hyundai Elantra, but I really like how the Spark looks. I am a bit uncertain about it, though, because one of the people who I respect the most told me he would never, ever, ever ever ever ever buy a car from one the Big 3 because they're not that good. My old car was a Ford, and while it lasted quite a while, it also wasn't the greatest car either. I really know nothing about cars other than they take gasoline and they go from Point A to Point B, so I'm probably pretty screwed.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the Spark. The Elantra is all right. Mine was a lemon, but I'm sure a brand new one would be good. I have to recommend a Corolla, though. Not the best in snow, but I get fantastic mileage.

A Corolla, huh? I'll have to look into that one. Do you know if there are Corolla hatchbacks? I've realized that hatchbacks are generally better for what I have to do for my job (toting servers around, they seem to fit a bit better in my coworker's Kia Soul than they do in my ancient Ford sedan). I'll definitely look into a Corolla, though.

Thanks!

Hell, if you are going to look into a Corolla, then look into a Honda Fit. I own one and I love the everloving shit out of that thing. Its a hatchback and it is glorious. And its a honda, so it holds its value. The seats fold completely flat and I was able to put a dishwasher back there with room to spare. They are also incredibly easy to fold down and back up.

I swear if that car ever turned into a human, I'd have to divorce my husband and marry the car. That's how much I love that thing.

Although if you are a tall person, like 6 feet or more, probably not the best choice.

I have an '05 Elantra that I bought in 07. I've recently been told that if you take care of it, you can probably get a good 10-13 years out of it. Mechanically, I haven't had any problems with it, but the other thing I've heard about Elantra's -- cosmetic things start falling apart after five or six years -- seems to be holding true:

I have to use a steering wheel cover because chunks of mine keep falling off. The mirror that lives in the driver's side sun visor fell out (but I imagine I could glue that back in), and the paint of my back bumper is kind of rubbing off. Plus, a while ago the black strips that line the windshield? One of those started to pop up. It would have been a $200 fix for a tiny piece of plastic clamp, but my dealer was all "Here, let just caulk that down and put this tape over it for a day." The next day I took the tape off and haven't had a problem since.

But like I said, that's all cosmetic for reasonably-priced car that still runs fine and gets good gas mileage (and generally looks fine unless you're really inspecting it). I know another guy who says Toyota and Honda make engines that last forever.

If you like the Chevy look, you could always try the Volt? And save yourself some serious gas bux at the same time.

I'm not a huge fan of Big Three cars because they don't have the best mileage/reliability ratings, which are really important factors for me.

An alternative to the Corolla that you might want to consider is the Toyota Yaris. They come in hatchbacks, but also four door. The main difference is that they're noticeably smaller and have fewer gadgety type options. You don't have a full-sized trunk. If you're okay with manual locks/windows, the basic model runs about $14K, so it's cheaper than a Corolla. Mileage is decent. It's a very good little car as long as you don't have to haul around a lot of people or stuff.
