I'm not a huge fan of Big Three cars because they don't have the best mileage/reliability ratings, which are really important factors for me.

An alternative to the Corolla that you might want to consider is the Toyota Yaris. They come in hatchbacks, but also four door. The main difference is that they're noticeably smaller and have fewer gadgety type options. You don't have a full-sized trunk. If you're okay with manual locks/windows, the basic model runs about $14K, so it's cheaper than a Corolla. Mileage is decent. It's a very good little car as long as you don't have to haul around a lot of people or stuff.
