Re: Minor things that people get wrong in fic all the time

Every time there's some form of mind-reading in fanfiction - or any story, really - people always think in coherent sentences, and they always only think one thing at a time. Unless I'm crazier than I thought I was, many minds doesn't work like that on their best day. I do not look at someone while on the train and think "Wow, he's a cute guy", I look at him and think "Cute like his tattoos hey it's cold in here I bet those are Levi jeans fuck forgot to fill my Metro card again why am I always doing that need one of those refillable cards haha my mom could do with that always singing hates the booth wonder if she'd like that guy oh no my period is that this week fucking hate that I even have worry about this shit oh lalala look at me period pants shit I'm staring at look away look away is this my stop it's not my stop Jesus the guy driving this thing must wish he was in Nascar yay love this song crank it up we could have had it alllllll rolling in the deeeeep [imagining that Charles/Eric fanvid] hey that guy would be hot with Fassbender hahaha."

Just bugs me that I've never seen thoughts written out that way, or mind-readers complain about what a jumble it usually is.

Now I want XMFC/Avengers crossover fic where Tony's mind totally sounds like that to Charles.

+1

Tony is one of the reasons why I enjoy MCU fics so much.

Same here. He's kind of my favorite thing about MCU--in case the icon didn't give that away.

I was about to say that Charles would be stupefied by the insanely complex techno-talk running through Tony's head at any given moment, but then I realized this is Charles Xavier and he wouldn't be fazed by that. Trying to untangle the science stuff from the endless streaming hedonism and narcissism would probably be tough, though.

Something like this? : "Charles studied him for a moment. “You are not purposefully obscuring your thoughts?”

“You can do that?” Tony made a thoughtful humming sound. “I read about that helmet Magneto has, but I didn’t know it was possible to do it without something like that.”

“And where did you read about that?” Fury asked.

“I picked it up somewhere.” Tony gave him a lopsided smile, raising an eyebrow.

“You mean you had JARVIS hack into the S.H.I.E.L.D. mainframe,” Natasha corrected, walking into the kitchen after apparently eavesdropping on the conversation. “Again.” She perched on the edge of the counter next to Peggy, apparently not caring that there was a sentient stove armed with a sink next to her.

A thought struck Tony. Call him sleep-deprived; he wasn’t normally this slow. It might also have been the caffeine; his thoughts were slightly scattered. “Are you saying you can’t read my mind?”

“I can read it,” Charles corrected, his eyes shrewd. “It is simply difficult to gather a clear picture. You are currently paying attention to this conversation, thinking about Captain Rogers, considering an upgrade to some sort of appliance, and concerned about the television. Yet I cannot get a clear picture on what exactly your thoughts are on any of these matters.”

The kitchen was silent as everyone absorbed that.

“No one can think that much,” Clint finally said, leaning back in his chair. “No one.”"

from: http://archiveofourown.org/works/452604 It's from the second part of a series where Tony is a mutant. And that's basically it for Charles describing Tony's thoughts in the series, iirc.

It's just X-Men movie crossover not XMFC though.

That is excellent. Thank you for the recommendation.

THIS, SO MUCH.

I also find it interesting that you mentioned X-Men, since that fandom is very guilty of the "perfectly coherent thoughts" thing (in my experience anyway). If I had a dollar for every X-Men fic where characters have a psychic mind-conversation and it's written like normal dialogue I'd be richer than Tony Stark.

I wasn't thinking of how egregious it would be with Charles (just how much I love that song and vid, lol), but yeah, I can imagine. I can understand that he's so smart and experienced by now that he can make sense of the muddle of people's minds when he's gotten familiar with them, but you'd think the first interaction would be a pool of disorganized data that he has to sort through for awhile.

Most of my thoughts are either just emotions, or are coherent narration/ranting. Sometimes I'll try and remember how something feels/smells/looks/sounds like but other than that my thoughts are actually rather coherent.

Yeah, I figured lots of people would actually have that type of mind in real life, so I can't say which kind is the majority representative. But I know for sure that not every mind is like that, so it's weird to never run into more of the incoherent sort in fiction (when the person hasn't been broken somehow).

I think in sentences and they are pretty organised, except there is like three or four of them stacked on top of each other at the same time, reading my mind would be really annoying for whomever could do it..

I've seen this done right exactly once. It was for a pairing I don't like in a fandom I'm not in and it was so good that the fic made my top 10 all time favorites list.

I wish I could say I've seen it even once, haha. Do you have a link, mayhaps?

Half of my thoughts are not even really in words. Or they're very disconnected words held together with images and feelings and stuff. Usually the words that are there don't follow English syntax unless I'm specifically trying to think things through carefully and/or word something.

I would be interested to see mind-readers who got more of an impression of images and feelings rather than wholly-formed sentences from at least some people.

Exactly! I know it would be really hard effect to capture in words, but it's like it's few even attempt a reasonable facsimile. I have seen some stuff where the mind's process isn't itself detailed, just the mind-reader's overall impression of what's going on in there. That's better than the perfect sentences, at least.
