Minor things that people get wrong in fic all the time

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The one that's bothering me in particular happens to be coffee shop AUs, or bakery AUs, or any sort of food service AU. Specifically, if the character you're writing about has long hair, they aren't going to be casually flipping it over their shoulder while behind the counter, I don't care how fun and whimsical they are. Their hair is going to be up or at least in a ponytail (some places say a tie every three inches, but not everywhere does.) And that's because, you know, the FDA has standard hygiene practices for food service places. :/ It just really bothers me when this comes up but never gets addressed.

How about you, F!S? Things people get wrong all the time in the fics you read?

maybe it's a bad coffee shop or they're just bad at their job

Considering they're more interested in fucking each other, it's probably both.

When they track the criminal's IP address using the GUI they made in Visual Basic.

You'd be surprised how often that sort of thing pops up in fics...

Might not be what you're looking for, but I haaaate when stories appear to just be regurgitating pamphlets on depression/suicide/cancer/etc. as dialogue.

As dialogue or as narrative, IMO. It gets so textbook and predictable that sometimes it starts to make the stories that did no research at all look good.

This isn't fic-exclusive, but it's the same general idea: I hate when people are shown swimming (or worse, bathing) with their glasses on. Drives me nuts.

... I take baths with my glasses on. How else am I supposed to be able to read?

I swim with my glasses on. I probably shouldn't cause sometimes they fall off (because my frames are oooooold) but I don't want contacts and being blind in the pool is no fun

Huh, okay, I guess these are things real people actually do! What do you mean my personal experience is not everyone else's whoops. @_@ Consider comment retracted!

Standard hygiene in medical procedures and recovery periods after sickness/injury. Come to think of it, I'm adding the fact that I've yet to see a fic in which total strangers even think about using protection before performing oral sex, because seriously...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wearing a condom during oral sex is still... not something people think to do. Shit, I don't even think the dumb kids at my high school knew it could be done.

Any idea where one my turn for realistic recovery time after being shot in the bullet-proof vest and knocked in the head?

As someone with a come fetish I run in the other direction when I come across that in fic, tbh!

Fic where the height difference between Thor and Loki is exaggerated ridiculously, like Loki being over a foot shorter than Thor wtf? Also in a similar vein Loki being significantly weaker than Thor and other Asgardians, dude may be a mage but he's a frost giant he's not exactly lacking in physical strength.

Yeah, Hiddleston is not tiny and delicate. They wouldn't have considered him to play Thor even for a moment if he were!

I will not read any fic that deals with my actual profession or training. Because 9 times out of 10 they have no idea what they're talking about and it just drags me out of the story with all the inaccuracies.

For me, this goes for most canons too. (Luckily(?) my area of expertise is not well-represented in media.)

I joined the Army because I loved military movies. Biggest mistake of my life. I spent 4 years being absolutely miserable and now I can't watch depictions of the military without getting upset at how incredibly wrong absolutely everything about the depiction is.

It is a bit of a broader things, but basically when people generalize american things to happen everywhere. Like people in the UK for example being unable to go to the hospital cause they are not insured, or american high school set ups for stuff happening in schools outside of the US. (Prom in japanese high schools, that sorta thing)

It's more a visual media thing than a fic thing, but I get annoyed when young people are always shown to be wearing reading glasses when reading or using a computer because it makes them look ~studious~ but none of them ever need glasses for driving or watching TV or just generally being functional. In other words, farsightedness among teens and young adults is being unrealistically over-represented and nearsightedness under-represented.

Every time there's some form of mind-reading in fanfiction - or any story, really - people always think in coherent sentences, and they always only think one thing at a time. Unless I'm crazier than I thought I was, many minds doesn't work like that on their best day. I do not look at someone while on the train and think "Wow, he's a cute guy", I look at him and think "Cute like his tattoos hey it's cold in here I bet those are Levi jeans fuck forgot to fill my Metro card again why am I always doing that need one of those refillable cards haha my mom could do with that always singing hates the booth wonder if she'd like that guy oh no my period is that this week fucking hate that I even have worry about this shit oh lalala look at me period pants shit I'm staring at look away look away is this my stop it's not my stop Jesus the guy driving this thing must wish he was in Nascar yay love this song crank it up we could have had it alllllll rolling in the deeeeep [imagining that Charles/Eric fanvid] hey that guy would be hot with Fassbender hahaha."

Just bugs me that I've never seen thoughts written out that way, or mind-readers complain about what a jumble it usually is.

Well... as one anon put it, assuming that what is true in their culture is true for every culture on the planet. This can be especially brutal in Japanese fandoms for Western media.

-We don't have senpai/kouhai structure in our school systems. No one expects seniors to take care of the freshmen, and the freshmen surrrree aren't obliged to respect the seniors

-Twins are not organized into an "older (sibling)" and a "younger (sibling)"; they are "twin (siblings)"

-We don't (generally) cry during sex. If one partner between two grown men (or, hell, women) was bawling as much as some ukes are in yaoi, we'd stop and ask how badly they were bleeding or who died or something. It's suspension of disbelief shattering and horrrrribly unsexy and augh it's everywherrrreee

Getting physically knocked/blown back by a bullet.

Staggering around in agonising pain, sure. But the actual impact of the bullet being enough to throw a person off their feet... no.
