(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 03:32 am (UTC)(link)also, uh, even if the character does turn out to be depressed, that is no reason why you cannot relate to them. You do not need to mirror their experiences 100% to be able to relate to them. People with depression are not like... some weird breed of alien. We got our mental problems that we struggle with, sure, but that doesn't make us unrelatable to by people who don't experience them. As long as you don't present it like you relate to a character with depression so now you understand all depressed folks everywhere and this is how they should fix it, nobody is gonna give a shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 07:16 am (UTC)(link)This. The whole point of being empathetic creatures is that we can relate to people's experiences without having gone through the exact same thing. The key is being sensitive about it, knowing that your experience, even if it's similar, is still different from everybody else's. Relating to people and equating your experiences are two very different things, and you're only doing the former.
