Re: Nonfandom secrets!

Fandomy, but I am way too lazy to make it an actual secret.

There's a character in my current fandom that I felt I could relate to. Until a really fantastic RPer of the character mentioned that one of his headcanons is that the character is clinically depressed. Now I can't unsee it and I feel monstrously guilty and awful about thinking we were similar, because I am not depressed and what kind of shitty person equates 'sometimes I get kind of sad and feel lonely but I smile and do something else to try not to dwell on it' to 'smiling to cover up the crushing weight of despair and isolation on the inside'?

Don't worry about it. This is a character you're talking about, and it's headcanon.

first off, it is just a headcanon, so unless the creator of your canon comes up and says 'character X is definitely depressed', their headcanon is not any more valid than someone thinking this character does not have depression.

also, uh, even if the character does turn out to be depressed, that is no reason why you cannot relate to them. You do not need to mirror their experiences 100% to be able to relate to them. People with depression are not like... some weird breed of alien. We got our mental problems that we struggle with, sure, but that doesn't make us unrelatable to by people who don't experience them. As long as you don't present it like you relate to a character with depression so now you understand all depressed folks everywhere and this is how they should fix it, nobody is gonna give a shit.

This. The whole point of being empathetic creatures is that we can relate to people's experiences without having gone through the exact same thing. The key is being sensitive about it, knowing that your experience, even if it's similar, is still different from everybody else's. Relating to people and equating your experiences are two very different things, and you're only doing the former.
