(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 06:22 am (UTC)(link)I found it a bit shocking that Theon's most recent torture, the castration scene - perhaps, we could say, one of if not THE ultimate sexual abuse, genital mutilation, refocused sexuality not on the man, but on random female extras. I thought it was in horrible taste, how that scene was written and filmed. I do agree there is a difference between portraying male torture sexually and female - they are both inherently bad, but one of them never happens, and it would have been interesting if Theon had been filmed a lot more sexually.
Yet in the scene, he is certainly the victim - he is both sexually assaulted by women who ignore his pleas to stop, and is castrated. Yet it is the women that are naked, with Ramsay pinching their asses. They made Theon's torture sexy, which is gross in itself, but not even he - the recipient - was the sexualized one. It was the women. It would have been interesting to see him filmed sexually, and him stripped naked, as the female equivalent of the scene would have surely entailed.
That being said, I think it's hard to deny that there's a certain weird and sadistic sexual element to how Ramsay treats and tortures Theon in the books. I can see it a bit in the series (last episode when the women were on him, Ramsay says he was feeling jealous, etc) but I wish that would be played up. You don't often see a guy in a mainstream series really and truly portrayed as a sexual victim, even if they are. and again, with theon, the attention was offset by the naked women..

ia with pretty much all of this, but in regards to these quotes, there was that other scene where he was almost gang raped by those Bolton men. And compared to Brienne's attempted rape that very same episode, his was much more sexualized as his was on screen and he was partially stripped nude
interestingly, I saw more outcry over her attempted rape rather than Theon's that time too despite this, but I can understand why. Not that that makes anything better or equalizes anything (rape should never be played off as sexy in the first place the way it was this last episode ugh), but I don't think the show will shy away from the creepy sexual subtext that goes on between Ramsay/Theon in the books since they've shown male-on-male sexual abuse already.I really don't understand why Theon couldn't have been naked in that scene when he's done full frontal nudity before and Alfie's totally cool with it, though. HBO's double standards when it comes to nudity are so transparent it's infuriating.
