it's not a double standard because they're two entirely separate things written in two entirely different ways with two entirely different sets of baggage and implications

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't someone here getting offended about Theon, like, yesterday?

Someone is always getting offended about Theon. I think it's required by law that we have at least one secret every two weeks that brings up his torture.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know what I saw on Tumblr?

The SJWs were less offended by Theon's sexual assault and castration and more bothered by the fact that the women who raped him were naked and thus objectified by male viewers.

I wish I was making this up.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I was cringing during that whole scene, because I was wondering if one of those naked girls is Kyra.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh for FFS, no-one's saying that the female characters in the scene have it worse than Theon. It's possible to feel horrible for Theon and despise Ramsay's female accomplices as characters and think that it's gross that the screenwriters/directors have yet again decided to put in naked actresses, presumably at least in part to titillate male viewers.

Yeah? So?
'Rape' against men is so insignificant an issue. It's like what, one in a thousand (Not a real statistic, just making the point that it's not a widespread issue, dont get on to me about my faulty numbers). It's a statistical, anomaly and can therefore be ignored to some degree.

Women being abused by media, reduced to nothing but objects for the gratification of male viewers, IS a significant issue and needs to be called out and fought against where ever we find it.

I'm not saying both of these situations are not problems, both these things need to go away; But one of these is a real ever present problem for modern feminists, the other is, to be perfectly blunt, a small case of men getting a taste of their own horrible medicine.

Orrrrrr maybe it is because the rape is terrible yes. And nobody but a bunch of lunatics are denying that. People are just also upset that the rape is yet again used as a way to titillate mainstream media with boobies. Cause GOT doesn't add enough sexualized boobies as is.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
The women raped him?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way about Theon as I do about Lucretia from Spartacus. At first, I wanted horrible things to happen to Theon because he did horrible things to other people, and I wanted Lucretia to be raped so she would get a taste of her own rapey medicine. Then, when my wishes came to fruition, I felt gross and totally unsatisfied. Sadistic revenge only makes things worse. It's a nauseous feeling you just can't shake. Now I feel bad for Theon, but I realize the answer isn't to torture, rape and castrate his torturer. I don't know what the answer is. (This is why I would make a terrible ruler. I would sit on the Iron Throne and contemplate ethics, instead of just delivering the King's Justice and having Theon swiftly executed for arranging the murder of innocent children.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely this. At first, when captured and tortured - I was like, yay, he's getting punished. Now I just think he's pitiful and it's pointlessly cruel.

To people who say the situations are different:

So you mean to say if Theon was killed offscreen and -- for argument's sake -- they had him shot up with arrows while his dong was showing and Ros spent the better part of two seasons being slowly tortured, sexually assaulted and having her genitals mutilated you'd be alright with it?
fauxkaren: (Default)

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-05-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what I mean when I say the situations are different.

Ros and Theon were treated differently as characters.

Theon has been given plenty of development and he's actually one of my favorite characters in ASOIAF. Even in the torture scene he's been getting development.

Ros was just... there. She was used as an object for male characters to talk at in order to develop their characters more or to serve as naked background decoration. She finally started to get some development of her own at the end of season 2/beginning of season 3 only to in the end be murdered and displayed in a sexual manner all to develop male characters more.

Sometimes I feel every GoT secret is a variation on: "Sansa/other man", "Catelyn is a bad mother/tactician/everything", "men vs women objectification". No one to say how much they ship Margaery/Sansa? Or became gingers because of Ygritte? Fell head over heels for Ned Stark?

He's one of the main characters, and his torture ultimately serves his character development (and Ramsay's admittedly). Ros's death was just used to further the character development of two other male characters (and I think we knew enough about them already anyway).

And - although I think this is more subjective - I feel that the Theon scenes, though nicely shot - just aren't aesthetised in the way that Ros's brief shot was. I mean, just look at secret 15. I think there's something deeply nasty about how painterly (look at the beautiful dead woman) that shot was.

Well first off it's impossible to even compare these two IMO since one of these characters isn't even a book character in the first place. The stuff that happened to Theon already happened in the book (I haven't gotten past the third book so apparently they are described in flashbacks which does make these scenes pretty pointless and gratuitous at this point, it's like, "ok, we know", in my opinion). The writers of this show had a choice of how to deal with Ros' character and if they wanted to write her out of the show they could've chosen a different way.

Also, Theon isn't dead at this point PLEASE TELL ME HE DOESN'T DIE no wait don't I don't want to be spoiled, he is my favorite

I'm lost. So everyone's upset because GOT shows a lot of boobies... but isn't the male cast constantly half naked, too?

From where I'm sitting, it's going both ways. The naked women appeal to the men (or lesbians) and the naked men appeal to the ladies (or gay men).

So what's the problem? Is it another double standards thing?

I honestly think this isn't just an HBO problem, it's a general ASOIAF problem. The author does write female sexual situations as titillating, but not the same for men.

I found it a bit shocking that Theon's most recent torture, the castration scene - perhaps, we could say, one of if not THE ultimate sexual abuse, genital mutilation, refocused sexuality not on the man, but on random female extras. I thought it was in horrible taste, how that scene was written and filmed. I do agree there is a difference between portraying male torture sexually and female - they are both inherently bad, but one of them never happens, and it would have been interesting if Theon had been filmed a lot more sexually.

Yet in the scene, he is certainly the victim - he is both sexually assaulted by women who ignore his pleas to stop, and is castrated. Yet it is the women that are naked, with Ramsay pinching their asses. They made Theon's torture sexy, which is gross in itself, but not even he - the recipient - was the sexualized one. It was the women. It would have been interesting to see him filmed sexually, and him stripped naked, as the female equivalent of the scene would have surely entailed.

That being said, I think it's hard to deny that there's a certain weird and sadistic sexual element to how Ramsay treats and tortures Theon in the books. I can see it a bit in the series (last episode when the women were on him, Ramsay says he was feeling jealous, etc) but I wish that would be played up. You don't often see a guy in a mainstream series really and truly portrayed as a sexual victim, even if they are. and again, with theon, the attention was offset by the naked women..

Idk man, literally every person I talk to about the show this season is like "EVERY THEON SCENE IS HORRIBLE, I FULLY HATED HIM BUT I DID NOT WANT THIS, WE GET IT HE'S BEING TORTURED CAN THEY PLEASE STOP NOW BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH MORE I CAN STAND." Honestly I read the books and as all this was only referred to afterwards, I was kind of down to actually see it happen but from what I'm seeing that's really rare. I mean it IS horrible and every scene like that fills me with dread and disgust, but I'm pretty unscarred afterwards and that fact is actually starting to make me wonder if it means I'm super tough or just super cold.

ANYWAY COOL STORY SIS I'm just saying, a lot of people have been very affected/upset by Theon's suffering. Maybe you're just missing it.
