(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)The SJWs were less offended by Theon's sexual assault and castration and more bothered by the fact that the women who raped him were naked and thus objectified by male viewers.
I wish I was making this up.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)'Rape' against men is so insignificant an issue. It's like what, one in a thousand (Not a real statistic, just making the point that it's not a widespread issue, dont get on to me about my faulty numbers). It's a statistical, anomaly and can therefore be ignored to some degree.
Women being abused by media, reduced to nothing but objects for the gratification of male viewers, IS a significant issue and needs to be called out and fought against where ever we find it.
I'm not saying both of these situations are not problems, both these things need to go away; But one of these is a real ever present problem for modern feminists, the other is, to be perfectly blunt, a small case of men getting a taste of their own horrible medicine.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)So you mean to say if Theon was killed offscreen and -- for argument's sake -- they had him shot up with arrows while his dong was showing and Ros spent the better part of two seasons being slowly tortured, sexually assaulted and having her genitals mutilated you'd be alright with it?

Ros and Theon were treated differently as characters.
Theon has been given plenty of development and he's actually one of my favorite characters in ASOIAF. Even in the torture scene he's been getting development.
Ros was just... there. She was used as an object for male characters to talk at in order to develop their characters more or to serve as naked background decoration. She finally started to get some development of her own at the end of season 2/beginning of season 3 only to in the end be murdered and displayed in a sexual manner all to develop male characters more.
+1

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)And - although I think this is more subjective - I feel that the Theon scenes, though nicely shot - just aren't aesthetised in the way that Ros's brief shot was. I mean, just look at secret 15. I think there's something deeply nasty about how painterly (look at the beautiful dead woman) that shot was.

Also, Theon isn't dead

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)From where I'm sitting, it's going both ways. The naked women appeal to the men (or lesbians) and the naked men appeal to the ladies (or gay men).
So what's the problem? Is it another double standards thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 06:22 am (UTC)(link)I found it a bit shocking that Theon's most recent torture, the castration scene - perhaps, we could say, one of if not THE ultimate sexual abuse, genital mutilation, refocused sexuality not on the man, but on random female extras. I thought it was in horrible taste, how that scene was written and filmed. I do agree there is a difference between portraying male torture sexually and female - they are both inherently bad, but one of them never happens, and it would have been interesting if Theon had been filmed a lot more sexually.
Yet in the scene, he is certainly the victim - he is both sexually assaulted by women who ignore his pleas to stop, and is castrated. Yet it is the women that are naked, with Ramsay pinching their asses. They made Theon's torture sexy, which is gross in itself, but not even he - the recipient - was the sexualized one. It was the women. It would have been interesting to see him filmed sexually, and him stripped naked, as the female equivalent of the scene would have surely entailed.
That being said, I think it's hard to deny that there's a certain weird and sadistic sexual element to how Ramsay treats and tortures Theon in the books. I can see it a bit in the series (last episode when the women were on him, Ramsay says he was feeling jealous, etc) but I wish that would be played up. You don't often see a guy in a mainstream series really and truly portrayed as a sexual victim, even if they are. and again, with theon, the attention was offset by the naked women..

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)ANYWAY COOL STORY SIS I'm just saying, a lot of people have been very affected/upset by Theon's suffering. Maybe you're just missing it.
