I can't see him as anything as straight either. I think it's because the actor and the writers have portrayed as being so comfortable in his sexuality. There's no, "Me thinks the Queen doth protest too much" I'm not gay! ranting that most people latch onto as signs of the character being gay. He knows what he is. His mentality is like, "I'm straight but if a guy at the gay bar wants to buy me a drink because he thinks I'm cute I'm not going to turn it down. Because, hey, free drink AND flattery!"

Yep, it's that confidence in himself and his sexuality I think that does it. Like with Coach Finstock, he was clearly able to admit that Danny was an attractive guy, but actually being attracted to him just isn't something that happens for him.

From what I understand (as in I watch the show, but I think this has been Word of God-ed?) the universe is supposed to be set in a universe where homophobia doesn't exist.

So you have characters who would be stereotypically homophobic (the Jerkass Sports Captain, Horrible Coach, etc) being accepting and even joking about it. Then there's usually lots of little things in the back ground, like gay couples kissing in the backgrounds of party scenes and girls wanting to be partners with the Hot Girl along with the guys. It's very refreshing in that respect.

I watch the show, but I didn't even notice this (except with Danny). That's really cool!

The only canonically queer character is (at the moment) basically a token/plot device though, so it falls into the "better than most but still not great" category imo.

IDK, he's got the same amount of character and background as any other secondary/tertiary character, and it's not reduced to "that gay kid." He's considerably normalized in the grand scheme of things, which I feel is really refreshing. Maybe it's not perfect, but it's a big step in the right direction, and I don't think it's fair to rag on a show that's gone to those lengths to normalize an aspect of society they could've very well ignored without any detriment to the plot.

That makes sense! I think it's also because he very plainly stated in that talk with Coach that nope, not gay. And it wasn't all defensive, just plainly stated and he's cool with it. No big deal.

I came here to say this. I mean, I ship him with whoever but I can totally understand your and the OP's perspective for precisely the reason you explained.

The character is just so comfortable, open, and truthful about it that you really don't question it.

I feel exactly the same. I view Scott as bisexual myself, but that is really solid logic.

Though on the sexuality front, you hit the nail on the head. My guy friends that are the same way, I never questioned. But my guy friends that were, as you so eloquently stated "Methinks the Queen doth protest too much" later came out as gay or bi. He's just comfortable with who he is. Well aside from the werewolf thing, but he seems to have grown into that and is starting to accept it.

So imma count that as character growth. :)

So I have never seen Teen Wolf (and I am LATE to this party) but I wanted to thank you all for your discussion, because now I am SERIOUSLY interested in seeing this series!

A world where homophobia doesn't exist? Where gay couples are kissing and no one is screaming about it? That is kind of AMAZING.

IA. I'm not sure if it's his single-target sexuality (aside from full moon shenanigans) with Allison that makes it so, or if the actor is just really, really straight, but even with the romantic signals I pick off directed from Isaac to him, he comes off totally straight.

Well the weird this is I see him as 100% straight too, but I can easily see Posey having some fun with a guy. Not seriously, but I can imagine him doing it.

But I doubt he ever would since he's been with Seana so long.

Agreed, with all three characters. So I don't ship him with Stiles and I shockingly don't ship Sterek :/

Haha, same here. There have been a few characters here and there that have come off as strictly straight to me. I sort of ship Scott/Stiles, but more in an "if it's you, it's okay" way from Scott since he's very frank about not being attracted to men. Stiles I feel is at least bisexual-leaning, partly because of his insistent curiosity about whether gay men find him attractive. I don't really have any reading on anybody else - Derek is too "GRR RAWR ALPHA MALE" to really seem to care much, and the girls...well, I ship Alison/Lydia, but it's sort of like, "boys are stupid and I find you attractive anyway, so how about dinner and a movie?" I don't think I could really give a label to them :P
