"TOUGH GUYS" WHO BAKE

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's enough anymore to ask for kickass female characters who nevertheless end up being valued only for excelling at masculine tasks, despite how feminine they might be in any other aspects. And I'm sick of male characters portrayed as cute and sensitive because they "don't mind" that they're into "girly" things, like that's somehow progressive.

For once, I want to see a perfectly macho hero who ALSO enjoys the hell out of conventionally feminine hobbies just because. A good ol' gun-slinging badass who bakes cupcakes -- and this aspect would not be treated like a joke or a character flaw. Like, if someone questions this habit, the character won't pissy or defensive but will simply stare that fool down until they realize their idiocy in thinking there's anything wrong with the behavior to begin with. And then maybe feed them some awesome pastries in between testosterone-filled action sequences.

I don't know, I'm very tired right now and all I'm saying is, now that it's becoming more acceptable in our media to see women pursue traditionally masculine roles, it'd be nice to see the flip side too -- and not just as the butt of a joke.

Agreed.

Also, cooking and baking are fucking rad. It's interesting not just as a gender-expectations flip, it's interesting on its own, because cooking and baking are cool and interesting things to do. Yeah.

It's pretty sexist, yeah. I think females are praised for doing so, because the traditionally male roles/hobbies/whathaveyou, are seen as ideal. Because they're what men are/do. Women are seen as the second or other, so a man doing something "girly" makes them weak/a joke.

Bingo! We have a winner!

This is also a pretty good explanation for why trans* women have to live with some terrible treatment from other people.

Or why women who shop in the menswear section are considered to be tomboyish and comfort-loving, but men who shop in the womenswear section are ~deviants~. Of all things, Madonna got it right in the intro to What It Feels Like For A Girl.

Funny how cooking is always called a female thing, but how being a chef is seen as a boy's only type deal.

YES! And chefs are always loud, gruff and ready to throw everyone out of the kitchen on their ear. Like he's a chef by day and a bouncer by night.

Like how nurses are traditionally seen as female, and doctors are male.

I'm seeing a pattern here.

I'd like to say that Kanji from Persona 4 is what you want, but... I think he was pretty secretive and defensive about his hobbies, if memory serves (haven't played the game in years).

I don't get why baking is considered unmanly. It's science for hungry people.

Tough guys with girly hobbies show up all the time in anime, but almost always as a joke.

Maybe you'd like the manga Otomen? It does deal with the fact that people tend to mock males who are into girly hobbies, but it's not played just for laughs.

Re-reading your initial comment, I'm honestly not sure if you're looking for recs on media with heroes like that or not, but as everyone else has jumped in with that... I kind of have one who bears mentioning?

He's - in my partner's words - "a fucking Boy Scout, okay, he is so not a tough guy", but... Ashley Winchester. Pretty traditionally masculine gunslinger-knight type, saves the planet (dude his canon is a '90s JRPG it's not any kind of spoiler), and retires as... a baker! Which is what he was good at before the whole getting possessed by a demon and getting recruited to save the world thing, and genuinely enjoys.

No idea what your feelings on old obscure JRPGs with somewhat awkward translations are, but... Wild Arms 2 is a hell of a game! 8D

(also seconding Kanji Tatsumi from Persona 4. he is a darling butch badass with incredible sewing talents... and eventually he calms down about "loving cute shit".)

They're not characters but you might like Si King and Dave Myers, aka the Hairy Bikers. They used to be largely associated with 'masculine' cooking, like huge slabs of meat, or massive meat and potato pies, but a couple of years back they did a series called the Hairy Bakers. These days they kind of do a mix of everything (their most recent series was 'Best of British', where they cooked everything from a roast to pies to French-inspired pastries). Most of their shows have clips of them riding their motorbikes, clad in leather and being generally 'manly', and then the camera cuts to them icing a batch of fairy cakes.

As usual TVTropes comes through. The trope you're looking for is Real Men Wear Pink.

...but actually, upon reading through these examples, I see that the majority of them seem to be played for laugh and not treated as a normal thing to be embraced. So the media does have what you want but it's doing a shitty job with it :\

How the hell has no one mentioned Alfred Pennyworth? That dude cooks, cleans, launders, repairs, organizes, and heals without so much as a single raised eyebrow.

And please don't say that Alfred isn't 'tough'. He has a double-loaded shotgun that would disagree with you.
