Which somehow makes the whole thing even more disturbing. I mean, brain damage is like my #1 fear so I'm biased, but also, if memoryless!Lockhart is just a kind of vain and approval-seeking friendly guy, does that mean he was like that before he got famous? His characterization made him fall straight into uncanny valley territory, IMO -- he's not CoS!Lockhart, but it's too easy to connect the dots to CoS!Lockhart to really be funny rather than completely depressing.
I think about the scenic route scenes in OotP too much, methinks...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Same here. Actually, the casual use of memory charms in HP horrified me in and of itself. How the fuck could you trust anything in that world when people can mess with your head on a regular basis, easy as pie?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 12:55 am (UTC)(link)On top of which, being institutionalised is also a fear, so I just couldn't deal with any of that section.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)I've mostly healed over. My relationships with a few people suffered for the things I couldn't remember happening, but basically after a certain point you just move on and make new memories. I just still have a lingering fear that I'll slip into that state again, so the idea of magically memory loss, having that state imposed on me by someone else, is pretty viscerally frightening for me.

I read a fascinating fic once that focused on the ramifications of just memory charming Muggles willy nilly and how dangerous it was and unethical.
Ugggggggh.

Here's my rec:
Wow. This is one of those fantastic stories that examines a part of canon we take for granted--of course, Muggles are Obliviated when they come in contact with the wizarding world, both for their protection and the safety of magic users. What if that isn't true, though? What if in addition to being grossly unethical, Obliviation is also highly dangerous? Can't recommend this one highly enough.
