Going to have to agree. From an "it's a kid's book" standpoint I can find it funny, but I feel like if it were a book for adults, it wouldn't be played for laughs so much. (Although cruel humor does seem to be a staple of British works. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Laser-guided karma as far as I (and a fair bit of the fandom from what I've seen) am concerned. Considering as he spent most of his adult life wiping people's memories and profiting off it, then he got his memory wiped? Yeah.

I have sympathy for characters who get amnesia, but he kinda deserved it. Plus he does seem to be recovering when they see him in the fifth book, and maybe he'll be a nicer person when he does.

I don't think the problem here is him personally. Yeah he was a terrible douchebag. But the fact that the OP thinks it's ~cute that his mind has been messed up is where it's weird. He may have deserved some sort of retribution but that doesn't have anything to do with infantilizing mentally handicapped people.

He was so incredibly sweet and adorable compared to Chamber-of-Secrets!Lockhart (seriously, JKR has some serious knack for creating antagonist characters that you just want to reach into the page and throttle to death out of rage).

Which somehow makes the whole thing even more disturbing. I mean, brain damage is like my #1 fear so I'm biased, but also, if memoryless!Lockhart is just a kind of vain and approval-seeking friendly guy, does that mean he was like that before he got famous? His characterization made him fall straight into uncanny valley territory, IMO -- he's not CoS!Lockhart, but it's too easy to connect the dots to CoS!Lockhart to really be funny rather than completely depressing.

I think about the scenic route scenes in OotP too much, methinks...

Same here. Actually, the casual use of memory charms in HP horrified me in and of itself. How the fuck could you trust anything in that world when people can mess with your head on a regular basis, easy as pie?

I'm not that viscerally squicked by selective memory loss, but becoming institutionalized or non-functional, especially through injury, scares the shit out of me. So the whole St. Mungo's chapter was just really disturbing to me.

Yeah. Memory loss is a bit more visceral for me because I have actually lost significant chunks of time (close to a year) and then had to deal with things people said had happened in that time that I couldn't remember. It creates an alarming sense of vulnerability very quickly.

On top of which, being institutionalised is also a fear, so I just couldn't deal with any of that section.

I read a fascinating fic once that focused on the ramifications of just memory charming Muggles willy nilly and how dangerous it was and unethical.

On one hand, I feel this might be a legit secret, because he did ACT cute when in the ward. It was like he was a child and not an asshole--but I don't think the idea is cute. It was one of the saddest things ever.

I agree with the other person, though; the existence of the whole place in general is pretty much the saddest thing ever.

Cute?! That was the most upsetting part of the books to me. Yeah, he deserved some comeuppance for his douchery, but what happened to him was really horrifying and really sad and still makes me sick to my stomach. That chapter is incredibly hard to read.
