My problem with the kid was that the plot, pacing, and tone were already haphazard nearly to the point of incomprehensibility, and the kid served no real purpose. The movie would have lost nothing and gained coherence by writing him out. Say what you want about Iron Man 2, but it was at least focused in what it was trying to do. Iron Man 3 was just a mess, and while the kid was funny, that's not a good enough reason to include him in a movie that's not supposed to be pure comedy. He did nothing more than contribute to the general atmosphere of punchline-a-minute jokefest in a movie that was trying to also be about PTSD and the demons you make yourself.

In fact, the only scene I can think of that didn't have a joke in it was about thirty seconds where Tony's remote armor comes into his room while he and Pepper are asleep.

I didn't hate the movie, but I sure wasn't satisfied by it, either.

The credits said something about Joss Whedon contributing? Which may explain a bit of the joke-a-thon writing, if that's what he was involved in. Even in Avengers it was like he got squeamish about anything serious happening for more than 30 seconds, and the constant mood whiplash got tiresome.

Or maybe Joss Whedon had nothing to do with the script, I don't know.

Agreed. All the Tony+kid interactions just left me wondering when Iron Man 3 had turned into a buddy comedy.
