Takes all kinds I guess. I thought it was hilarious and subverted what the "kid sidekick" plot strands usually go for.

I don't agree. I thought it was refreshing to see a different dynamic between an adult and a kid. None of the previous IM movies and TA didn't use a kid so why would they want to pander to families this time?

Can I just say how much I love the kid's expression here. "Yeah I'm standing here with Iron Man, no big, that's JUST MY LIFE NOW."

My first thought when he showed up was 'ah dammit, a kid.' But then it turned out to actually be a cool little interlude. I thought so, anyway.

But some parts of it did feel a touch out of place in the middle of an action movie, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! We left the movie and the guys I went with were like "so, how did you like it?" and I told them I wasn't sure, but I couldn't put my finger on what I didn't like. I thought about it and about 10 minutes later just yelled out "THE KID SIDEKICK!" It drove me crazy. Upon second viewing, I did like that Tony was still Tony, even when he talked to the kid (Now I'm thinking, where's my sandwich?) but I still didn't like it.

I wouldn't be surprised since this is Disney we're talking about. They axed the whole "Tony is an alcoholic thing" (which somehow magically went away) so yeah I agree.

I loved the kid. After the travesty that was Nightmare in Silver, I thought he balanced the tight line between "charmingly precocious" and "annoying" great.

I liked him. I didn't find him at all annoying like I do most child actors.

LOOKING AT YOU, DEAN KOONTZ

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-05-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I really really hate kids in media. Especially either of the Fanning sisters, or that one girl who was in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and that one House episode. In movies I find them abrasive, screechy, whiny, etc. One of the worst things in the world is when an author shoehorns a kid into every one of his books while simultaneously being terrible at writing believable children. Children in books come off as either way too immature or way too mature.

Basically, if there is a child in the movie, I probably kind of wish they would just die.

Iron Man 3 was one of my....two(?) exceptions, the other being Jack in Pitch Black. While yes, the kid came off as a little too mature for his age, I found him refreshing. Also the way Tony reacted to the kid is just sooooo far from what we usually see in adult/child interactions that I couldn't help but love that section of the movie.

The kid didn't bother me. Incoherent battle scenes (more enemies doesn't equal better), that bothers me.

Normally I hate kid characters/subplots like that as well, but I've got to disagree with you on this one, mostly 'cause Tony was just his usual snarky asshole self around the kid, who got in some pretty funny lines himself. It just worked for me.

Also, I just got back from seeing the movie, but don't worry, I'll spare f!s my unintelligible squeeing. Except for this: PEPPER HAD SO BETTER GET HER OWN SUIT IN THE NEXT MOVIE WHEN TONY INEVITABLY REBUILDS EVERYTHING. OR KEEP THE POWERS AND/OR GET NEW ONES, I'M NOT PICKY. I JUST WANT MORE SCENES OF HER KICKING ASS.

I liked the kid. The snark between him and Tony was cute.

Disagree. I love the parts with the kid. To each their own, eh?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Who cares what you think, what I think is ~more~ important and I thought the kid was pretty awesome - would have preferred more Pepper being awesome cuts, but I'll take the kid

The kid had a purpose! He needled him into admitting the existence/dealing with his (maybe) ptsd. Then he re-motivates him to deal with shit his way (build stuff, with a store of scrap!) rather than relying on what he's already built. Tony's got to be moving forward or else he's flying backwards.

Plus he was cute as hell.

I liked the kid and Tony interacting with the kid.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm mad that the superfamily bullshit in fandom is probably going to get so much worse now, and the kid could be irritating, but I liked that Tony was a douche with him and some of his best lines were him just destroying that little kid with snark. So I'm on the fence.

Seriously I still can't afford to think about "cause we're connected 8')" in public. Best.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
My problem with the kid was that the plot, pacing, and tone were already haphazard nearly to the point of incomprehensibility, and the kid served no real purpose. The movie would have lost nothing and gained coherence by writing him out. Say what you want about Iron Man 2, but it was at least focused in what it was trying to do. Iron Man 3 was just a mess, and while the kid was funny, that's not a good enough reason to include him in a movie that's not supposed to be pure comedy. He did nothing more than contribute to the general atmosphere of punchline-a-minute jokefest in a movie that was trying to also be about PTSD and the demons you make yourself.

In fact, the only scene I can think of that didn't have a joke in it was about thirty seconds where Tony's remote armor comes into his room while he and Pepper are asleep.

I didn't hate the movie, but I sure wasn't satisfied by it, either.

I thought it was awesome. He seemed more like a real kid, instead of a plot-device-shaped movie kid. And the way Tony interacted with him was sincere too, he likes kids (That autographed picture with Iron Man saying "Emma, save me!!" oh my heart) but he's not gonna go all gooey over one.

Also strictly from a plot perspective, they needed some sort of OC at that point in the movie, to help Tony out and to make him confront his issues in a way that he couldn't or didn't take from his friends...I'm trying to think how an adult would've worked in the role and I'm not sure. Although some kind of crotchety hard-bitten old lady would have been AWESOME, that I can see ㅋㅋㅋ

Important to the story =/= important to the plot, but is still important nonetheless

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-18 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to dislike kids in most movies that aren't specifically about kids, because kids are predominantly portrayed as sweet innocent (or at most, mischievous) little beings who bring out the hidden good in Corrupt Grown-Ups and are total saps slash turn everyone else around them into total saps.

A kid who is a good kid but also a bit of an asshole, and full of snark? Awesome! Quite frankly, even if he'd served no purpose whatsoever I would've loved him - so the fact that he was pretty important to the story was just the icing on the cake! :D

And he was important, OP - it's just that he wasn't important to the external conflict and surface plot (i.e. the things that were physically happening), but rather his relevance was to Tony's inner journey and and emotional conflicts. Harley's incessant pestering - one that is very typical of kids, by the way - ended up pushing Tony into confront his PTSD a little more head-on. And he helped Tony remember what he's good at and what he can do, so that Tony could still be a badass and save himself and Pepper even when he'd basically just lost everything around him.

I mean, I can see where you're coming from, OP, but while using specifically a kid may have been because of the Disney background, Harley did serve a purpose in the story and he wasn't unnecessary.

[personal profile] 30_rock_office 2013-05-18 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I totally disagree. Harvey was cute and awesome. He kind of reminded me of a mini-Tony since he liked learning how things worked and had an absent father and didn't take Tony's bull. He was cute and funny without being the shit-eating character kids are usually made to be when they interact with adults in TV shows and movies.

Frankly, I just loved seeing Tony grooming the kid into being TinyTony. It was the candy lines that got me.
