Important to the story =/= important to the plot, but is still important nonetheless

I tend to dislike kids in most movies that aren't specifically about kids, because kids are predominantly portrayed as sweet innocent (or at most, mischievous) little beings who bring out the hidden good in Corrupt Grown-Ups and are total saps slash turn everyone else around them into total saps.

A kid who is a good kid but also a bit of an asshole, and full of snark? Awesome! Quite frankly, even if he'd served no purpose whatsoever I would've loved him - so the fact that he was pretty important to the story was just the icing on the cake! :D

And he was important, OP - it's just that he wasn't important to the external conflict and surface plot (i.e. the things that were physically happening), but rather his relevance was to Tony's inner journey and and emotional conflicts. Harley's incessant pestering - one that is very typical of kids, by the way - ended up pushing Tony into confront his PTSD a little more head-on. And he helped Tony remember what he's good at and what he can do, so that Tony could still be a badass and save himself and Pepper even when he'd basically just lost everything around him.

I mean, I can see where you're coming from, OP, but while using specifically a kid may have been because of the Disney background, Harley did serve a purpose in the story and he wasn't unnecessary.
