I had the same thought. The leader of a terrorist group with an ideology that believes anyone inferior to them doesn't deserve to live? Yeah... I'm okay with Khan being a white English guy.

... Given current climate, you actually might have a point there. The original Khan worked because he was coming from a different context both within the show and outside it, and because he functioned as an attack on eugenics both in principle and practice.

However, the 1960s version of racism was still heavily planted in eugenics and the world wars and the civil rights movement, whereas today it's more 'random evil foreigner', with audience who'll read the character that way regardless of the statement he makes on eugenics. So ... you might have a point.

However, I think that means they should have not used Khan, not that they should have made Khan a white guy. Because the point made by the original Khan does still stand, and whitewashing the character does fundamentally undermine that. The simpler option would have been to just use a different villain, rather than stepping into the middle of this massive mess in a cheap attempt to cash in on TWoK's nostalgia factor.

Most people I've seen debating the use of Khan agree about this. I'm not overly familiar with TOS, but other names thrown around included making him a variant of Gary Mitchell or Garth of Izar.

I think it had to be Khan because of the funky blood that regenerated itself so they could do the switched-TWOK ending. I can't exactly remember, but I think Gary Mitchell just gained superpower (like being able to manipulate things with this mind) and I don't think he would have worked in the story.

Um. I'm in this thread, two comments up?

Just ... shaky fictional science isn't really a good enough reason to step right into the middle of a complex racial issue? Seriously, just rework the script. If you need a character to die heroically and then come back again, Trek has a bunch of possible methods that you could use instead. I know they were trying to evoke the ending of TWoK, but again, cheap nostalgia and shoddy science really don't make good enough excuses.

To be honest the whole reboot of TOS (and associated nostaligia) in general seems cheap. It plays into the major problem of Hollywood lacking originality in recent years. I get wanting to anchor the story into something that would guarantee an audience but it feels like they're trampling on all of the amazing statements and progress TOS made. Given the width and breadth of Star Trek I'm disappointed that they couldn't find a new story or wouldn't try to tell it.
