Maybe it's because Azumanga Daioh was one of the first Japanese moe/quirky girl character shows to hit the West? It also came before the craze of cute girls doing nothing in shows got out of hand.

I didn't know about it when it first came out. I don't really keep up with stuff like that.

I just know that it, unlike stuff like Lucky Star or Haruhi, was actually funny and enjoyable to me.

And them doing nothing (Lucky Star) is just something that I don't get at all.
